Default inventories estimate liming CO₂ from the amount of carbonate applied. Our SCEPTER counterfactual asks a different question: what happens to the same anthropogenic acidity with vs. without lime? In the MRB, lime lowers acid–base CO₂ emissions. Getting the sign—and magnitude— right matters.

As we argue in our new study (see yesterday’s post), anthropogenic acidity—not lime—is the main driver of soil acid–base CO₂ emissions. So we first reconstructed the MRB acid–base balance since 1900: acid inputs far outweigh alkalinity inputs, especially outside heavily limed regions.

We haven’t done a full LCA for the historical analysis, so can’t answer directly. But at the high CDR efficiencies we find (and lower required crushing energy), I’d expect it to remain net-negative depending on transport distance and type. CDR-optimized liming would need a full LCA of course.

For a century, we’ve essentially been running an Enhanced Weathering field trial. In our Nature paper out yesterday, we show that agricultural liming in the Mississippi River Basin acted as a net CO₂ sink—while offering a rare century-scale analogue for EW. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Enhanced Weathering preprints are also becoming a meaningful part of the EW pipeline: 51 of 382 peer-reviewed terrestrial EW papers (13%) had a preprint. Of 97 preprints, 53% are now published—but lag matters: 80% through 2024 are published, vs 57% from 2025 and 12% from 2026.

Enhanced weathering publications are growing exponentially. Based on our just-updated literature list (doi.org/10.5281/zeno...), for peer-reviewed terrestrial EW papers, the estimated doubling time is ~2.8 years (R² = 0.92). Outside formal peer review, growth is even faster: ~1.3 years (R² = 0.88).

What if carbon removal could help clean PFAS-contaminated soils—and help pay for it? Our new paper explores a potential win-win-win: enhanced weathering can boost plant PFAS uptake, while pyrolysis destroys PFAS and stores carbon as biochar. paper: doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

Ahoi AI-captain; a lot of that can be found in section 14. To me one of the biggest surprises was what a mess the current reporting landscape is. We found >80 reported measured for grain size just as one example. Difficult to do a meta-analysis.

I absolutely agree; and the good thing is that this agreement is the strongest accross experimental studies. Lab and field experiments almost exclusively report improvements in agronomic outcomes, with a few neutral and almost no negative occurrences. :)

Is agricultural liming a CO₂ sink or source? In our preprint, we argue that the key is the counterfactual: CO₂ emissions are driven mainly by acidity inputs, not lime itself. In the Mississippi Basin, liming reduced CO₂ emissions and increased alkalinity export. Preprint: doi.org/10.21203/rs....

What works in the ocean may not work in soils. Our new paper shows that total alkalinity titrations—robust in seawater—can be misleading in soils due to organic alkalinity. We argue that charge-balance & cation-based accounting may be more robust for terrestrial CDR. doi.org/10.5194/bg-2...

Enhanced Weathering publication numbers keep rising exponentially, with especially strong growth in preprints and other non-peer-reviewed outputs — a clear sign of momentum in the field. 📚 Citable EW bibliography: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... ➕ Submit missing studies: tinyurl.com/ERWmorelit
Stacked bar chart showing annual counts of Enhanced Weathering publications by sub-discipline. Total output increases strongly over time, reaching 169 publications in 2025, including 85 peer-reviewed terrestrial EW studies and 71 non-peer-reviewed terrestrial EW outputs. Recent years also show contributions from related areas such as rock flour use as fertilizer, mine tailings and waste streams, reactor-based EW approaches, and patents, highlighting both rapid growth and diversification of the field.

More is better 🌍—at least for monitoring enhanced weathering. Our new preprint shows that larger catchments & aggregated soil data cut noise, lower costs, and prevent over-crediting. Crediting must move beyond single fields. See link below.

Our new paper shows that soil cation exchange can delay CO₂ removal from enhanced weathering by years to decades. Lag varies by soil, climate, and land use—longest in high-CEC regions like the Corn Belt. Big implications for MRV, credit timing, and deployment strategy. Timing matters! 🪨🌾 Link below.
