"Wholesale electricity prices in the United States and Europe have risen by 30–40 percent in the past year alone, largely due to higher gas prices." Increased demand is also an issue, with data centers one major cause of increase. rmi.org/three-priori...

Three Priorities for a New Age of Electricity Load Growth - RMI
Electricity demand growth is being caused by more than data centers, and rising electricity costs call for system solutions

Gas prices (nat gas/methane) are making electricity more expensive in the U.S. There is broad agreement among analysts that as US LNG export capacity doubles in the next 4 years that US gas prices will go much higher. And thus so will domestic electricity prices.

I'm behind on my reading, but this is a big deal, a crucial reframing, and very disturbing. Also want to highlight the great set of secondary conclusions, incl. that other countries should take an extra conservative approach to evaluating the climate impact of US LNG

Anyone who blames the failure and success of nuclear power in the U.S. to just one issue (cost, build time, NRC,...) ignores the fact that nuclear power faces many other issues worldwide (mining, enrichment, refueling, waste storage, meltdowns, proliferation,...). www.oneearth.org/the-7-reason...

7 reasons why conventional nuclear energy is not the answer to solve climate change | One Earth
Conventional nuclear doesn’t just have one problem. It has seven. Here are the seven major problems with conventional nuclear energy and why it is not a solution to the climate crisis.

While Gov Hochul says NY needs to go slow on climate goals & should use an "all of the above" energy approach with a lot of new nuclear, I counter that nuclear is too expensive & too slow, and renewables can do the job, with no slow down on climate. www.wgrz.com/article/tech...

Our latest report asks a simple question: What if, instead of spending billions replacing aging gas pipes, utilities helped nearby homes switch to electric heating? The data shows this would often cost less, lower utility bills, AND cut pollution.Full report: switch.box/lpp Let's break it down: 1/6

EESI was saddened to hear of the passing of Rep. Raúl Grijalva, a top advocate for climate action and environmental justice. EESI worked closely with him and his staff over the years. We thank Rep. Grijalva for his service and offer our condolences to his family and staff.
The House Committee on Natural Resources described Grijalva as "one of Congress' top advocates for climate action and solutions, environmental justice, protecting our open spaces, defending tribal sovereignty and treaty rights, and respecting our bedrock environmental protections."

Check your inbox! Our final issue of COP29 Dispatch covers the outcome of the negotiations. Save this graphic of key takeaways for U.S. policymakers. We look forward to bringing you daily updates from COP30 next year in Belém, Brazil!
1. The final package of decisions coming out of COP29 is called the Baku Climate Unity Pact.
2. The final decision on the new collective quantified goal (NCQG) landed on two numbers. The new climate finance goal for developed countries to deliver for developing countries is $300 billion per year by 2035. Globally, countries committed to working towards $1.3 trillion in climate finance per year by 2035.
3. President Biden released a statement to the press, celebrating “another historic outcome” at COP29.
4. Small island states and least developed countries, among others, expressed anger and disappointment at what they felt was an unfair, insufficient outcome.
