By cannibalizing their siblings in the womb or avoiding meat-eating pliosaurs, fearsome carnivores like the megalodon ballooned to proportions that would dwarf any shark alive today

Last week, I had the privilege of telling my kindergartener’s class all about paleontology and dinosaurs.🦖🦕 The experience left me with more energy than I expected. 🧪 #SciComm
A paleontologist stands at the front of a kindergarten classroom giving a presentation about dinosaurs and Earth’s history. A slide showing a diagram of Earth is projected on a smartboard beside her, while students sit on a colorful alphabet rug listening attentively.A paleontologist holds fossil specimens while speaking to a kindergarten class. A fossil image is displayed on the classroom screen behind her as students sit on the floor watching and asking questions during a hands-on lesson about paleontology.

A puppy before puppies. These tracks were made by mammals called oxyaenids, sort of catdog-like carnivores that thrived circa 60 million years ago before true dogs and cats stepped onto the scene. From Wyoming, on display at the Raymond M. Alf Museum.

One of my favorite photos I’ve taken at the Smithsonian. Can you see the bird? A bird built its nest inside the mouth of a Triceratops. An avian dinosaur decided that a dinosaur was the perfect place to raise more dinosaurs. The fossil record comes full circle. 🧪 🦕♻️🕊️
Close-up photograph of a bronze Triceratops head sculpture outdoors at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. A small brown dove sits on a nest built inside the sculpture’s open lower jaw, creating the impression that the bird is nesting inside the dinosaur’s mouth. Trees and a museum building are visible in the background on a sunny spring day.

Photograph of a handwritten page containing a list of dinosaur questions submitted by kindergarten students ahead of a classroom presentation. Questions include topics such as where dinosaur bones come from, what T. rex fossils look like, why dinosaurs were so big, how they died, what is inside a dinosaur bone, why Ankylosaurus had a club tail, how many dinosaur species existed, and which dinosaur was the most dangerous.
