New preprint! TLDR: We mapped the genetic architecture of neonatal vocalization in deer mice, and found candidate genes expressed in the cerebellum that could be contributing to the evolution of temporal structure in infant cries #Bioacoustics #neuroskyence www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

The Genetic Architecture of Neonatal Deer Mouse Cries Implicates the Cerebellum in the Temporal Control of an Infant Social Behavior
Vocal communication is a conserved vertebrate social behavior that begins at birth with the cries of infants. These neonatal vocal signals vary across contexts to elicit parental care that matches inf...

Ever see a mouse stand on its hind legs and belt out a song?@xmikezheng20.bsky.social, @cliffscience.bsky.social, and @arkarupbanerjee.bsky.social track this behavior in Alston’s singing mice. See what it might say about the origins of communication. cshl.edu/singing-mice-speak-volumes/

Singing mice speak volumes | Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
All mice squeak, but only some sing. Scotinomys teguina, aka Alston’s singing mice, hail from the cloud forests of Costa Rica. More than 2,000 miles north, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) neurosc...

For no good reason, when I plot a spectrogram for visual inspection or sharing I just use regular ones. I had never really considered it though!

USVSEG: A robust method for segmentation of ultrasonic vocalizations in rodents
Rodents’ ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) provide useful information for assessing their social behaviors. Despite previous efforts in classifying subcategories of time-frequency patterns of USV syllab...
