It’s really irritating being able to see how American media works now that the Overton window is completely broken/owned If somebody else was president, we’d be hearing about this stuff for months or years— but now they disappear by the end of the week

I have—and enjoy owning these works! but confess I pick them up and read pages at random—I’m not studied in philosophy, have no other Stoic books, don’t have any context—I just enjoy him! I’ve got a feeling Wilson will tear him down a bit for me, but hoping in a horizon-broadening way 😅

I enjoyed it—a subject matter *expert* commenting (frankly) on what had been left on the cutting room floor. I haven’t read much of her non-fiction before—after that review, I got her book on Seneca in the hopes she’ll be just as frank and direct.

This is good stuff! We want this!
In 1961, Progressive editor William Evjue wrote of the Wisconsin Socialist
legislators he had known by saying:
"They never were approached by the lobbyists, because the lobbyists knew it was not possible to influence these men. They were incorruptible." The policies of Zohran Mamdani have also been compared to sewer socialism. In a speech at the Knockdown Center marking his first 100 days as Mayor of New York City, Mamdani described his administration's focus on municipal
services as "pothole politics". Mamdani called this approach "our 2026 answer to sewer socialism" and highlighted efforts such as filling 100,000 potholes, increasing garbage containerization, and modernizing catch basins to show how government can deliver public goods.

Hi @kenwhite.bsky.social this is near you, right? Is there any way to know whether the military did the civilian coordination with Pasadena that’s outlined in this document? www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/D...
Tonight, the US military will be conducting a training exercise in northeast Pasadena until 1:00 a.m.
During this time may hear limited helicopter activity, controlled explosions, and simulated weapons fire. Pasadena Police will be assisting with pedestrian and vehicle safety in the immediate area. This event is not open to the public or media.

At a time when the corrupt leaders of the country openly threaten using the US military against civilians in blue cities, I think this kind of “live fire” nonsense should be discouraged by the City of Pasadena

This was from a recent podcast on how we anthropomorphize humanoid robots—this warning of how comparing machines to humans only brings us *down* to their level struck me techwontsave.us/episode/316_...
I'm one of these people who is very anti-robot rights, as it were, because I believe it's essentially a degradation of human rights. It doesn't elevate robots to the same status as humans, it degrades humans to the same status as robots. I think we should always, when we're looking at these machines, treat them as what they are, which is avatars of capital.

You're not being nice to a conscious being if you help a robot cross the street, you are helping capital in some way. I think we're very susceptible to being manipulated, for the same reason that I've talked about over exaggerations of capability. We see a human form and we start treating it like a human.

Ah, found it. From September! Quote is from Justin Wolfers. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w...
There was one recent study of populists, we looked at every populist over the past century around the world, and it found that 15 years after the election of a populist, average income in a country was 10 to
15 percent lower.

In a country like the United States, that means your children will be $15,000 a year worse off because of this president, and they'll be that for the rest of their lives, right? So that, if your children live a long and healthy life, your children will be a million dollars worths of if this president follows the pattern that past populists have.

Endlessly frustrated that folks were afraid to take Republicans head-on when it comes to the economy… They’re terrible at it! No long-term vision, cannot *produce value*—only borrow or steal it. “Your children will be $15k a year worse off because of this president… for the rest of their lives…”

Me, to my friends, over two years ago—and the head of the FCC yesterday It’s depressing how many folks have been content to be treated like—and act like—“mushrooms”, as the saying goes. Hope we snap out of it.
