My oshi Lee Van Cleef
A four frame comic about my eternal love for western actor Lee Van Cleef. In the first frame I am hiking in a forest with a friend who asks me "In the Hunger Games would you rather kill me or let me win?". I reply "I'd let you win of course!". In the second frame she is smiling happily and asks: "Aww! And would you save me or Lee Van Cleef?". In the third frame I quickly turn my back to her. We both are without expressions. In the fourth frame I reply , back still turned, "...You of course". She yells: "WHY DID YOU TURN AROUND THEN!!! Look me in the eyes!".

Friday at work
A comic made of four post it notes about people asking me if I'm afraid I'll be replaced by AI. The first panel asks "aren't you afraid AI will replace you at your job?". In the second panel I start thinking about a skull on a pedestal I saw yesterday. In the third panel me and my colleague are standing in front of it. My colleague asks "whose skull is that???" As I say "do we have a skull cleaning kit?". In the fourth panel I'm back to the present conversation and answer "I mean bitch can try."

A four frame comic made of post it notes about my work at the library. In the first frame the text reads : it's Monday. Someone gave me a bunch of bezoar stones. In the second frame I am holding the bezoar stones in disgust and saying "I don't like them Jean-Michel." My colleague Jean Michel replies: " they're rare!". In the third frame I'm looking conflicted and holding them. In the fourth frame I say "can I have a parasite instead?". Jean Michel replies: no.

Mystery Season 2
A four panels comic about how hard I find it to keep up with new shows. In the first panel me and my friend are sitting on a couch in front of the tv. My friend says: "Hey, the writer of Mystery TM has started working on Season 2!". I reply "Oh!". In the second panel, I ask "When did season 1 come out? 2022?". My friend replies: "Yeah, part 1 in 2022 and part 2 in 2023 on Lulu." I say: "Oh yeah, 4 eps every week then 6 eps in a row right?". In the third panel, I appear confused. I ask: "Wait...how did it even end?". My friend hesitates and says: "Err...Naomi Watts finds out she's the mystery?". I reply: "IT'S NOT THE AXE GUY???". In the fourth panel, My friend turns to me and says: "...Let's just rewatch Poirot.".

Keigo is a japanese system of honorific speech and I often joke about French having a version of it with my friends aha (using "vous" versus "tu" etc)

It's funny how the French have a reputation for being rude while our letters end with stuff like "please accept our most since salutations and highest consideration"

French Keigo
A comic in four post it notes about my habit of being too formal in emails I send for the library. In the first panel I am writing an email and saying "Dear colleagues, would you be so kind as to send us an article from the journal of [...] With utmost respect and-". In the second panel a new mail arrives with a little ping. In the third panel the library has replied: "Hi! Sure, here's the PDF :). Best, John." . In the fourth panel I look in horror at the mail and say: "I USED TOO MUCH FRENCH KEIGO AGAIN!!!"

"Gamblers who manage to follow "responsible gaming codes of conduct," one study found, contribute a mere 4 percent of gambling revenues. "If responsible gaming were successful," an author of that study told a radio journalist, "then the industry would probably shut down for lack of income." "
Whether the gambling industry is sincere in its campaign to promote responsible gambling, or whether the driving impetus behind this campaign (as behind similar campaigns by the alcohol and tobacco industries) is to insulate the industry's products and practices from blame for problematic consumer behavior, the fact remains that a grossly disproportionate percentage of its revenues happen to derive from precisely such behavior. Gamblers who manage to follow "responsible gaming codes of conduct," one study found, contribute a mere 4 percent of gambling revenues. "If responsible gaming were successful," an author of that study told a radio journalist, "then the industry would probably shut down for lack of income." The conflict between the industry's responsi- bility rhetoric and the profit it reaps from irresponsibility leads some to the cynical conclusion that the promotion of responsible gambling, first and foremost, is a public relations strategy geared toward protecting rev- enue. As the Canadian gambling scholar James Cosgrave has commented, "responsible gambling is a form of risk management taught to individu- als, for individuals, but it is also a method of risk management" for states and the gambling industry.

"Shaffer replied that he didn't think it was the casino's obligation to warn people."
"How do you know if you've gone beyond enough?" Luntz asked Shaf- fer during the 2003 keynote panel. "Are there any signs?" Warning signs, Shaffer responded, were spending more than you intended, going beyond your budget, and beginning to crave the activity. "Do casinos do enough to warn people of the signs?" Shaffer replied that he didn't think it was the casino's obligation to warn people. Luntz asked for the house lights to be turned up so that he could ask the same of the audience: "Is it the casino's responsibility to warn its patrons that they've reached a point of too much, or is it individual's responsibility to know when enough is enough?" Nearly all raised their hands for "individual's responsibility." As the scene demonstrates, the discussion around "responsible gambling" slips easily from scientific into moral and political terrain, with industry participants taking clear sides on the social debate over what sort of regulation should characterize the sphere of commercial consumption.

"Shaffer asked the audience: "Isn't it possible to take in a huge amount of money and reduce gambling-related harms?""
THE 2007 MEETINGS of the National Center for Responsible Gambling opened with a town hall forum, held in a vast room in the conference facilities at the back of the Paris casino resort. Howard Shaffer presided over the gathering, whose purpose was to "challenge conventional wis- dom" about problem gambling. Some four hundred were in attendance, a group comprising health professionals (24 percent), academic research- ers (24 percent), gambling industry members (27 percent), government officials (14 percent), and representatives from other professional areas (11 percent). "It's good to have all the stakeholders in the same room," said Shaffer, neglecting to note the relative absence of gamblers. Conference aides had distributed "Response Innovation" clicker tech- nology at the entrance to the ballroom, and as Shaffer polled us on a number of widely held beliefs-the idea that the spread of legalized gam- bling leads to a spike in problem gambling, for instance-we pressed small buttons on the handheld devices. Our responses were transmitted, tallied, and posted on a large screen at the front of the room. After each polling, Shaffer invited audience members who represented the position of "conventional wisdom" to speak at the microphone in the center aisle, then promised that their beliefs would be challenged one by one in the upcoming panel sessions. Some deviated from the format, returning the challenge to Shaffer. A middle-aged man voiced doubt over the industry's motivation to support...Some deviated from the format, returning the challenge to Shaffer. A middle-aged man voiced doubt over the industry's motivation to support research initiatives on problem gambling. "We had a tour of this casino earlier and learned that two million dollars come in per day. If the industry is making that much money, doesn't it make sense that they'd want to protect it, and that they'd have little incentive to encourage anything that could change that?" By way of answer, Shaffer asked the audience: "Isn't it possible to take in a huge amount of money and reduce gambling- related harms?" Dispensing with the clicker technology to pursue this unscripted line of questioning, he had people raise their hands in the air. "How many believe it is possible to take in large amounts of money and reduce gambling-related harms at the same time?" Another audience member took the microphone. "Howard, it's not just about making a profit-it's about maximizing profit, and that's where the problems come in." Shaffer asked: "Is there a limit? What's the limit?" Someone in the back of the hall called out an answer: "In the industry, there is no limit." A woman in the front row stood and pointed out that revenue was exploding and had grown to three times what it was only recently. "I don't disagree," Shaffer responded, "but it's not a criticism you're making, because Disney does it too." Still standing, she countered: "At Disney you have limits on the rides." Although many had their hands raised to speak, Shaffer stopped the conversation and moved on.

I like when people either go Hannibal Lecter (extremely funny man) or "this man is simply not all there and won't talk" ( the serial killer in Red Rooms ) because the in between is always so bad

(and the fact that they are designed from the macro to the micro to be extremely addictive too. I do like that the author never blames the players who are often accused by society of being "weak willed", she always underlines how relentless the call to play and continue playing is)

Yes it's obviously not a 1:1 comparison but the part where she explains that gambling machines are actually soothing for most players because they put you in your own bubble away from risk really caught my eye too

Reading Addiction by Design, Machine Gambling in Las Vegas (2012) : "As Sherry Turkle has observed, children often personify electronic toys that fail to act in a predictable, consistent manner and thus seem to cheat: "If you cheat, you're alive," they told her."
"The opaque internal operations by which gambling machines arrive at
and deliver their verdicts are a source of great wonderment and conjecture among gamblers, as is evident in the countless discussions that gamblers initiate on Internet forums.“Knowing it's computerized doesn't really explain anything," Rose commented."That just makes it more of a mystery.""One of the great questions in philosophy," begins an article in the gambling magazine Casino Player,"is how the body of man, which is mechanical and concrete, can contain the element of mind, which is ephemeral. This has come down to the simple statement that we have a 'ghost' or god' in the machine. So too with today's slots." Evoking the ephemeral, ghostlike will of the random number generator, some in the industry call this component the Really New God."The RNG runs on
a computer chip, but people act like it's casting a spell," a designer told me. Scholars of technology have noted that people tend to attribute agency
to computerized devices (much as they attributed agency to mechanical automata earlier in history). Lucy Suchman links this tendency to the fact .....Lucy Suchman links this tendency to the fact that computers are "internally opaque and liable to unanticipated behavior." As Sherry Turkle has observed, children often personify electronic toys that fail to act in a predictable, consistent manner and thus seem to cheat:"If you cheat, you're alive," they told her. The degree of fascination that a given machine holds for its users, she argues, is directly related to the degree of unpredictability and aliveness that it conveys. "

Also in Oppenheimer he acknowledges the complexity of his character and here I was stunned that "Soulful nice man who didn't really want to build Evil Horse and doesn't even cheat on his wife and cries for Zendaya" goes back to "let's kill 50 suitors now with my EPIC BOW" in thirty seconds

I loved the weird effect they did to make them look like the food was forcing itself into their mouths - I think the "american soldier has massive PTSD from his many war crimes" aspect could have had more horror elements like this, or at least a lot more dread with longer scenes (and less talk)

There are discussions to have about a director's style VS the viewer's perceptions and demands VS the actual history but most of them have turned a bit into costume cinemasins, with pretty troubling comments about which face is allowed to be "from the past" and which is "too modern" (read: trashy)

I'd consider myself passionate about costumes and period films but these past few years I've been frustrated by how shallow the conversation has been, it's just been endless ragebait videos about how "accurate" everything needs to be (even by serious historians!).

I'm reading A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge which is set in a world where people have to learn facial expressions and I'm fascinated by the concept that the lower classes are controlled through their inability to show anger:
'I see.' Madame Appeline sighed. She reached over and took hold of Neverfell's hands, and smiled sadly into her face. 'Neverfell ... I know that you were very upset by everything
you saw down there, but there are some things that you need to understand. Drudges are not like us. They thrive on routines and hard work, whereas luxuries and comforts do not really mean much to them. They do not really feel pain or fear, any more than stone bleeds or trembles when you chip it. A few of them play at having simple personalities, but it is nothing
more than an act, like monkeys dancing.' 'But ... but that's not true! Neverfell thought of Erstwhile's
mute, frustrated anger.'That's what everybody wants to think. The drudges do feel - they just don't have the Faces to show it. I hate it, the way they can only look calm and eager and
willing to please, even when they're watching each other die. Its horrible. And I know why nobody teaches them more Faces. It's just so that everybody else can pretend drudges aren't real people. That's right, isn't it?' 'The Face training for the drudges is carefully considered,' Madame Appeline answered swiftly. What would happen if
drudge children were taught unhappy Faces? They would grow up considering that they might be unhappy. They might look around and see unhappiness on each other's faces, and their own unhappiness would grow. If they wear a happy face for long enough, on the other hand, they are much more likely to believe in the end that they really are happy. And there's no real difference between being happy and believing you are happy, is there?'

Captain Torture
A four frame comic about Captain Torture. The first frame shows the sign "BREAKING NEWS" and the drawing of a man, with the words "CAPTAIN TORTURES PASSES AWAY" near him. The second frame shows a journalist holding a mic, as she says "A controversial and divisive figure, Captain torture will be remembered for his key role in history." The News title is "Mourning day for Captain-". The third frame shows three posts on social media. The first one is by a man called Paul James @Paulitician. He writes: "I didn't always agree with Captain Torture but he sure was a man who believed in something." The second post by James Paul @Avegetable reads: "I pay my respects to Captain Torture and his family. His heart was in the right place- with our country." The third post is by SonicVomit @SonicBleh , and reads "HE TORTURED PEOPLE". The fourth frame shows an interview on TV. An angry man on the right is saying: "Let me tell you something, Jen. I think it's SICK to celebrate Captain Torture's death. These people should be LOCKED UP, and also tortured-". The news below says: "Every president on earth pays homage-".
