David Bocarsly, CEO of Jewish California, a statewide coalition of 46 Jewish groups that backed the bill, framed its passage as a major turning point.

“This is a historic step for the Jewish community,” Bocarsly said in a statement. “Under the shadow of Nazi race theory, American Jewish leaders asked the government to count us only as a religion. That was an understandable attempt at self-preservation, and it didn’t work. Our community was mischaracterized and misunderstood, and we were excluded from interethnic coalitions and the data that shapes policy.”

I'm pretty sure that's a medieval trash picker
A trash picker. It is a telescoping rod with a hand grip on one end and two pads on the other, in a claw. When you squeeze the grip, the claw closes. That means you don't have to bend over so far to reach trash on the floor, and your hands stay clean. The medieval model has far shorter range, though you could probably mount it on a stick

Is it any worse, or meaningfully different, than the argument for escapist art, generally?

“Having lost his mother, father, brother, an grandfather, the friends and foes of his youth, his beloved teacher Bernard Kornblum, his city, his history—his home—the usual charge leveled against comic books, that they offered merely an escape from reality, seemed to Joe actually to be a powerful argument on their behalf…

The escape from reality was, he felt—especially right after the war—a worthy challenge… The pain of his loss—though he would never have spoken of it in those terms—was always with him in those days, a cold smooth ball lodged in his chest, just behind his sternum. For that half hour spent in the dappled shade of the Douglas firs, reading Betty and Veronica, the icy ball had melted away without him even noticing. That was the magic—not the apparent magic of a silk-hatted card-palmer, or the bold, brute trickery of the escape artist, but the genuine magic of art. It was a mark of how fucked-up and broken was the world—the reality—that had swallowed his home and his family that such a feat of escape, by no means easy to pull off, should remain so universally despised.”

THE DEATH OF THE AUTHOR
ROLAND BARTHES

In his story Sarrasine Balzac, describing a castrato disguised
as a woman, writes the following sentence: ‘This was
woman herself, with her sudden fears, her irrational whims,
her instinctive worries, her impetuous boldness, her fussings,
and her delicious sensibility .’ Who is speaking thus? Is it
the hero of the story bent on remaining ignorant of the
castrato hidden beneath the woman? Is it Balzac the
individual, furnished by his personal experience with a
philosophy of Woman? Is it Balzac the author professing
‘literary’ ideas on femininity? Is it universal wisdom?
Romantic psychology? We shall never know, for the good
reason that writing is the destruction of every voice, of
every point of origin. Writing is that neutral, composite,
oblique space where our subject slips away, the negative
where all identity is lost, starting with the very identity
of the body writing.

Prejudice is like some harmful bacteria. Once it enters your
system, it is difficult to eradicate. It multiplies in short time. It
can only be conquered by developing an antibody. The only anti-
body you have for fighting prejudice inside yourself is to have
a sense of well-l being i in relation to the world outside yourself.

For example, in a community where citizens are raging against
integration because it will spoil a hundred-year-old pattern of
imposed segregation, there will always be some citizens who favor
integration. The segregationists have the harmful bacteria and
are not trying to fight them. The integrationists have built up
antibodies to the bacteria of prejudice. Perhaps their parents gave
them a more balanced understanding of the Negro-white situation.
Perhaps they are people who feel secure and at ease with them-
selves, so they don’t have to take out their frustrations on a
minority group. Perhaps they are people who want to see the
world change and want to take part in this change.

The growth of prejudice can be explained very simply. If you
had an unpleasant experience with a red-haired boy, you would
probably not assume that all red-haired boys are evil. But if you
had been taught from infancy that all red-haired boys are evil,
the seed of prejudice was already in you. Your one unpleasant
experience with a red-haired boy would only prove (to you!) that
your prejudice was right. From then on you would be a violent
anti-redhead.

It’s just the same—whether your prejudice i is anti-Catholic, anti-
Semitic, anti-Protestant, anti-Negro, anti-German, anti-. Anything,

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

Meme. Trolley problem. Top text reads: "IWW IU 520 (Railroad Workers) PRESENTS: TROLLEY PROBLEM SOLUTION" It then shows a trolley passing through a switch. A figure stands off to one side next to a lever controlling the switch. In front of the trolley, on the track it is on, are tied 5 people. On the siding, there is one person tied up. A red arrow points towards the wheels of the trolley, which are equidistant over the middle of the switch. Bottom text reads "Slip the switch by flipping it while the trolley's front wheels have passed through, but before the back wheels do. This will cause a controlled derailment bringing the trolley to a safe halt.
