The two teams that combined to win the past four WNBA titles got swept in the semifinals. Two teams that have never before won a WNBA title -- one of which is an expansion team in Year 2 -- will meet in the Finals. The 2026 WNBA season. Just as we all drew up.

Back to New York after a whirlwind of a five days in Atlanta. I hadn’t been here since 2012 when I went on a social justice and civil rights tour ETGAR 36. This is such a special city and who knows maybe I’ll be back sooner than later.

According to a league source, the #WNBA believes last night’s pool report over final 4.3 seconds of overtime in Dream-Liberty should have included the word “miscommunication”. Much more on this and what else we have learned about the end of Game 2 on this week’s @theixsports.bsky.social podcast.

NY have also screwed up timeout usage at other times this year, even earlier this game using the Q4 reset to advance the ball with no apparent play in place, then having to use a full anyway. Stewart has some credibility; they don't, really. The refs may have screwed up, but NY definitely did. #WNBA

It's hard to give the NY bench the benefit of the doubt. They didn't sub anyone out to avoid fouls despite Fiebich, JJones and Fauthoux all being on 5. They didn't even seem to realise Fauthoux had fouled out until she signaled '6' to them herself. The assistants largely look disengaged.

Fahy does wave his hand slightly, but it's hard to tell who he's looking at (NY bench, scorer's table, 3rd ref offscreen). It looks more like a 'no' wave than a 'yes', but that's complete supposition. That's probably the moment mentioned in the post-game ref report.

The response is minimal, DeMarco isn't looking at her, but one of the assistants shakes his head, seeming to indicate they don't. Fahy's right next to her at the time, but in the visible shot they don't seem to talk to each other (there's plenty of time where the shot is elsewhere).

Have been watching back bits of the NY-Atl game to try to parse the mess. Obviously it's hard to see everything due to replays and angles cutting stuff off. With 4.3s left in OT, Stewart appears to turn to her bench and make the X signal between Reese's FTs, asking if they have the reset. #WNBA

Going into the second have the Dream lead the Liberty 56-54. There have been 29 fouls called in this game and the Liberty have missed 7 of their free throws. That could come back to bite them down the stretch. Breanna Stewart is currently on pace for a 50 piece.

Key battle for the Liberty and Dream is can the Liberty get the Dream to give a coverage in pick and roll. First screen is an under, everyone stays home. Second screen is an over. Good patience to get the re-screen, hold two, open the roll for Breanna Stewart

The Liberty had a *rough* third quarter. They turned the ball over NINE times. NYL now has 19 turnovers for the game and the Dream have scored 29 points off the Liberty's turnovers, that's over 42% of their total points. Jordin Canada and Angel Reese have 9 steals combined.

Talked about this on the podcast: Atlanta are playing *so* aggressively on defense. You have to move the ball. If they're overplaying to attack the ball, there's space away from you. It's tough to get rid of it in time to beat the defense, and they recover well, but NY have to move it better. #WNBA

Sabrina Ionescu has stepped up in this game. She has 12 points on 60% shooting. The Atlanta perimeter defenders would sometimes stop on her drives with hesitation. I wonder if they paid attention to her up and down season and though oh she won't make this.

New York have apparently decided the least scary place to put Ionescu defensively is on Howard. Because she has to guard someone, and they don't want her at point of attack on Canada or chasing Gray. Howard has to attack that matchup. Don't be surprised if SI is on Hillmon later in the series. #WNBA
