Great days at the 1st Andenes whale summit, showcasing #whale #research in #Norway. Even treated to 20 sperm whales after talks 🤩🐳 I shared #PhD results about effects of unregulated whale watching. But a great reminder of the benefits of ww when done sustainably and as a research platform 👏🐳🐋🫍

🧪 Whale hormones… from less than a grain of rice A new method can measure 8 hormones (like stress & pregnancy) from tiny blubber samples, meaning more insight from every biopsy. 🐋 Stranded whales showed higher stress 🇳🇴 ONE sample can now reveal pollution, diet & health Big step for conservation

We need to make sure that everyone in this picture who wants to continue in marine science can, and will. The ocean needs everyone’s voices. #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience #womeninstem #womeninmarinescience #girlsinscience #scienceforall

This “leaky pipeline” effect, with females dropping out of the field as they get older, and positions get more senior, is not uncommon in sciences. But it needs to be addressed. Diversity in a field is an advantage. Building a family should be compatible with a career in marine science.

Clare Andvik @clareandvik.bsky.social · 11/02/2026
Despite marine science having proportionally more women than other sciences (39% as opposed to 29% in other sciences), and even a strong female majority at bachelor programmes, women still only represent 13-24% of senior positions.

Final day of Arctic Frontiers #EmergingLeaders #AF2026 #EL2026 Presented at kickoff meeting of #Polhavet (Arctic Ocean) 2050. Intense week. New people, new information, new impressions and new ways of thinking. Hopefully friends for life. Hopefully success in making the Arctic a better place.

Many commented on the striking absense of many US scientists & professionals who’d normally be present at such a conference. Despite tensions, there was much passion, and hope. And a shared, stubborn love for the Arctic that cuts across disciplines, institutions and borders. Let’s hope it’s enough.

I haven’t been to many conferences outside of my field (biology), & it can be easy to laser-focus on your own narrow area of research and miss how it all fits into the big picture. This conference covered everything from ecosystems to tourism, infrastructure, economy, law. Addresses by Norwegian PM

Thoughts on the Arctic Frontiers conference, inc. some of the geopolitics 👇 (a 🧵 because I can’t compress it all!) Arctic Frontiers is the largest Arctic-focused conference in the world: attracting scientists, politicians, policy makers and diplomats. Given geopolitical tensions it was also timely

What a strange & disappointing headline from NRK about the PFAS restriction. Not a celebration that we will protect humans & environment from toxic forever chemicals... but a lament that rain jackets "won't be as waterproof" www.nrk.no/nordland/reg... & why were no toxicologists interviewed?!

New research reveals the extraordinary energy demands of humpback whale mothers, who travel over 3,000 miles without food to birth and nourish their 2,600-pound calves, a feat now further imperiled by climate change and marine heatwaves disrupting their critical food supply.

Normally the whales barely notice the sampling and quickly resume their pre-sampling behaviour. A 3cm long and 1g sample is, after all, not much for a 10m long 10 tonne animal 😆🐳 (5/7) 📷 Krisztina Balotay

The tiny sample is used for EIGHT different analyses! 🔎🧬🔬It gives valuable knowledge into diet, health, pollutant levels, genetics and more to help us understand and mitigate the multiple stressors facing the population 🇳🇴🐳 (4/7) 📷 #norwegianorcasurvey

Every sampled whale is photo-identified 📸 So tissue analysis results can be linked to what we know about the whales from previous sightings. This also ensures we don’t sample the same whale twice in a season, and allows us to to observe the wound healing quickly! ☺️✅ (3/7) 📷 #norwegianorcasurvey
