Imagine if instead of regulating drone risks the normal way (which we did), we instead paid weird bloggers lots of money to worry about superintelligent dogs sprouting thumbs and using drones to kill us. This is pretty much how the US is approaching AI risks and regulations. My latest:

Why We Can't Let Enormous Weirdos Regulate AI
Imagine if instead of regulating drones via the standard lengthy, boring, and bureaucratic process - which we did - we instead decided, in the name of fostering all-important American drone innovation...

not just a missing stair but a giant hole in the floor where if you say "hey could we put some plywood over at least part of this hole, it makes it really hard to use the space" you get "no!!! the hole does not want plywood!!! the hole must gape!!! all hail the hole!!!"

will be mad forever about this. I was willing to semi-religiously follow some of his philosophical principles and he made it impossible to do that in community by declining to ever learn a single social skill even for the good of the cause

I met people in the Boston free software scene that seemed legitimately cool and like they were trying but rms's heavy-handed vibe curation hung over the whole thing and it just didn't work

rancid vibes, he clearly only wanted to talk to the women-specific group bc some handlers had beat it into him that he ought to bc of bad publicity over sexist comments

clara @clararaubertas.net · 30/09/2026
he did not personally sex pest me but the one time I met him at a free software event he asked if I was with a women-specific group and when I said I was there on my own bc I was just interested he immediately turned away and ignored me

clara @clararaubertas.net · 30/09/2026
this is also how free software as a movement got sidelined (one smart sex pest drove away basically every smart and interested woman)

"what if time wasn't real? I bet a lot would happen" - okay, sure, but time is real so let's get you to bed buddy

clara @clararaubertas.net · 30/09/2026
ooh, yes. related to why their "timeless decision theory" stuff is such bullshit - decisions and actions on those decisions happen within time!! time is real!!

not just *into*, but her dad's theological preferences are specific enough that he's created his own elaborate apologetics website that's like what if lesswrong was about obscure conservative Christian shit and also was basically all one guy

well the fact that this is so close to everyone's work/career situation here makes the offer unethical. if what was on offer was just a non-work-related party scene it would be way less skeevy

and, I don't think we are violating anyone's privacy or being sex-negative to point out that it's quite likely that multiple people who passed this orgy's political test with flying colors have been talking to US senators

"playing well with others" is a legitimate human skill that I don't have much natural talent in, and that's both a real disadvantage and something I've worked on both on purpose and also as a natural consequence of, like, living a normal ish life

(I.e. the tradeoff where mastodon picks the first side and bluesky picks the second side and it's probably obvious to most of us that there are both pros and cons to both choices and no perfect have-everything choice)

(the socio computing problem is the tradeoffs between total data ownership and control within a network vs accessibility to non-tech types and general convenience of use)

and tbh I, reluctantly, give yarvin the credit yud doesn't get for actually coding something, even tho it was something super pointless that pretended it was both the first project to notice an interesting problem in socio computing and also that it addressed it in any useful way which it did not
