Weekend reading these compelling nonfiction essays by # TinaMakereti 'This Compulsion In Us' exploring fractured lives, separation from maternal lines, coming together again. Living in the in-between of race, culture, identity, finding one's place through the act of writing. Inspiration of #Merata
This Compulsion In Us by Tina Makereti, her first nonfiction work, a book of essays on her journey towards belonging, through separation from mother and culture towards education and influence of grandmother, of Maori women who claimed their place, of the restlessness of the in-between, the discomfort of being out of place and the ease of accepting the invitation to come within community. This Compulsion In Us by NZ Aotearoa author Tine Makereti.

No plot, an ideal companion for a journey, easy to pick up, put down without fear of losing the thread. Loved its slight wackiness, weird anecdotes and familiarity while waiting for that flight to land, that train to arrive, those heightened senses evoked while travelling. Flights #olgatokarczuk

Excellent review of Cathedrals by #ClaudiaPineiro from @grantrintoul.bsky.social "more than a mystery, powered as it is by moral outrage & built through the voices of its various characters. It is ultimately hopeful, suggesting that we can build our own lives, like cathedrals" 📚💙 wp.me/pAytP-1KB

Claudia Pineiro is now well known for exploring social issues through novels which read like thrillers, but she does not perhaps get the credit she deserves for the way she structures her stories. …

My 3rd Read for #WITMonth Gilgi, One of Us #IrmgardKeun tr. #CarolineWaight (german) An unforgettable character, Gilgi's awakening begins the day she turns 21, when a truth is revealed. The exploration of who she is + consequences of how she feels shock her into unconventional, change. Brilliant.

My 2nd #witmonth read was a graphic novel by Iranian author #marjanesatrapi #Persepolis is a moving portrait of childhood throughout huge change and restraint on freedoms within a family that encourages education, honesty and expression. A riveting cultural insight, humanely told, unforgettable.
Persepolis, The Story of a Childhood and The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi translated from French.
Growing up in Iran, how life, school, socialising, being in public changed. A move to school in Vienna, Austria and the Return to Iran in early adulthood.Marjane meets and bonds with her Uncle, her conversations with him, learning about the path his life took, his encouragement of her educates Marjane even further.
