There were so many anti-solidaristic tendencies in the Trump 1 era. Call-out culture, appeals to oppression hierarchies, social blackmail. Identity is fundamental to collective liberation which is why it was so jarring to see it used explicitly for the purpose of hurting your comrades

What "whataboutism" means is not that. It means that you can't defend the bad actions of one person/group by saying that a different person/group also does bad things. They might both be bad.

A good example (though a bit extreme) is this: Your house catches fire. The first thing you do is try to get your books out. A passerby asks you, "What about calling the fire department or saving your infant?!" You reply, "I've had enough of this whataboutism!"

We agree that the company thinks this is worth their time. That doesn't mean it's good. Having priorities and limited resources means that what you're dismissing as "whataboutism" is an entirely valid question.

Something weird about learning Romanian is seeing how many English words and expressions are straight from Latin. For some reason, I never got this from Spanish... maybe because the language is so similar to English that it felt so much more obvious?

What there makes sense at all? Jews had a sense of unity well before modern Hebrew and that's GOOD. The problem is that they decided to oppress other people living in Palestine/Israel. Also, Palestinians aren't bearing the brunt of European antisemitism -- Anti-Arab prejudice is totally different

Yes, there was a reclamation by the Temple. My pet heterodox theory, though, is that the two goats is actually an older tradition. It's a ritualization of Abraham sending Ishmael to the wilderness and sacrificing Isaac.

Anyway, my theory is that YK comes from an ancestor worship ceremony, which is very common in the autumn for global religions. The ancestors here are Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac. We repeat Abraham's sacrifice of his sons to... ?? ask G-d for forgiveness? Remind G-d of Abraham's righteousness?

So this also accords with Passover placed two weeks after a Rosh Hashanah. But I don't see the confusion in the YK confessions. It's concentric circles of peoplehood - family, tribe, nation.

Absolutely enraging for local journalists to hold tight to their "neutral" stance when it comes to the armed federal occupation of DC. This isn't about "fighting crime", it's an overt expression of racism, xenophobia, and power. We aren't "critics", we're community members who believe in a #FreeDC.
