CKAN 2.12 just shipped. The biggest change: files are now first-class entities — they can exist independently of resources, be owned by users or orgs, and carry their own metadata. This is the foundation for file-first dataset creation and resource versioning later.

5/ Today: contributing to CKAN 3.0, MLCommons Croissant, and DCAT-US v3 — the federal metadata standard that will govern how US government datasets are described and discovered. The metadata work that started in a basement in 2011 is now upstream of how AI systems will find public data.

3/ CKAN's real value was never the portal interface. It was the API, the metadata model, and the extension architecture that let you build on top without forking. That composability made aggregation and federation tractable — across 100+ portals, federal projects, and research work.

2/ NYCFacets won the NYCBigApps 3.0 Grand Prize in 2011. The key insight: better metadata exponentially increases the value of the underlying data. They called it "extrametadata" — two million facts retrieved from raw open data by inference, not manual curation.

Most unexpected use case: Wolfgang from Ondics built a sheet music directory on CKAN. AI metadata generation via Gemini/ChatGPT, YouTube playback, Dropbox export. Open source release coming.
