This series is really intriguing. Great storytelling, amazing visuals, and top notch educational content around bees. Can’t speak more highly about this series so far. youtu.be/Mej2usrRCl0?...

fuck me for being this person, i guess, but public universities are a civic good and shouldn’t be run like businesses. and if you’re going to insist on running them like so, at least do some market research. students like their professors; they don’t want MOOCs taught by ChatGPT.

Super rare that I Merlin picks up not one but two birds to add to my life list. Horned Lark and Purple Finch feels like the name of secret agents, maybe even time travelers who are sworn enemies with just a wisp of intimacy between them.

If my research idea comes to fruition, books on seeds will be joining the books on bees on my shelf. 🤓 Not quite a seed book, but I hear amazing things about Botany of Empire.

The naturalist Jane Goodall died today at 91. Hope, she argued, is not merely “passive wishful thinking” but a “crucial survival trait.” Revisit a conversation with Goodall, from 2021: nyer.cm/F55JtsS

My harvest of dragon tongue beans to replant next year. I started off with just 7 seeds that I brought up with me from Florida to Vermont, and after growing them out and saving the seeds I now have a couple hundred to give away. 💜

Maybe I’ve misunderstood the NSF-GRFP this whole time, but as a second year Masters student I’m not actually eligible to apply? #science

Please share with anyone who cares about NSF support for graduate students and take 30 seconds to sign and leave a comment. The deadline for the 2025 Graduate Research Fellowship Program is about one month away and literally no one can apply. #NSFGRFP jasonjwilliamsny.github.io/grfp2025/

I can’t believe the leaves are changing already at such a dramatic pace. I really want to pick them up, tape them back up on the trees, paint them green and pretend the cold isn’t coming. ☹️

This morning I’ve been thinking about how a farm or garden without its pollinators will still produce flowers, but those flowers will never bear fruit, and a community without reciprocity may still have people, but it will not truly function because it will not nourish, sustain, or regenerate itself

Little homesick for the natural beauty of Florida’s swamps, but I’m slowly adjusting to Vermont’s seemingly unending winter. Enjoy this photo I took last spring of the zebra longwing (Heliconius charitonius), Florida's official state butterfly.

When I took this photo over the summer, I didn’t know what kind of bee this was, and completely misidentified it when I first saw it. Now I know it’s a Melissodes bimaculatus, the two-spotted longhorn bee and one of my favorites(they are all kinda my favorite) 😅 #gardensky #plantsky

Two summers ago I took this photo in my best friend’s front yard. She has a Dutchman’s Pipe Vine who’s flower looks like a portal to another world, it also hosts the Gold Rim Swallowtail (Battus polydamas). The two of them are said to have coevolved together before time immemorial.

Took this photo at a farm called Sweetwater in Tampa. Vibes there are S-Tier! Syngamia florella, the orange-spotted flower moth Unlike many moths, Syngamia florella is diurnal, meaning it is active during the day, much like butterflies. This behavior is common in moths with bright warning colors.

The fiery skipper (Hylephila phyleus). Fiery skippers, along with most other species of skippers and skipperlings(love this name), can hold their wings in a "triangle" shape. This position is thought to better absorb the sun's rays, and rays from my heart because I love them.
