There was a co-authored DC Circuit opinion last week in the ballroom case! Maybe it's a new trend.

Of course, elsewhere in the opinion the judge showed that in-person voter fraud is vanishingly rare, and "greater risk of fraud" than ~0 does not imply "prone to fraud."

The sentence before the one you quoted does say, "[a]t trial, there was universal agreement that a much greater risk of fraud occurs in absentee balloting, where some campaign workers are known to harvest mail-in ballots through several different methods, including raiding mailboxes."

Now that NYT is including the Detroit suburbs in their benchmark analysis, neither candidate is ahead. But that still doesn't include Detroit itself or midsize cities, so I'm not sure how useful this benchmark analysis is at the moment...

One of the research scientists at OpenAI who announced the ten solutions this week said they had tried the Astra model on all the Millennium Prize problems without success, so far.
Xcancel pot from Noam Brown (@polynoamial) saying:

And yes we did try other major problems without success. Sadly no Millennium Prize problems (yet).

But also, we didn't spend a lot on each problem. It's possible to push test-time compute much further.

Surely, it's too strong to say the AAUP shouldn't do anything that could be characterized as political. But one could consistently support those suits (which challenged broad attacks on academic research and academic freedom) while not supporting the AAUP weighing in on this primary.

Somewhat ironic that this Fifth Circuit rule would significantly increase the probability of success for the Capitol Police Officers who sued Trump and others for the injuries they sustained on January 6.

It is a side effect of one judge's interpretation of our copyright laws. The judge relied on a series of prior cases where the originals were not destroyed but converting the original to another format to make storage/searchability easier was still deemed transformative (pp. 15-16 of linked file).

Fun fact: Sometimes a lawyer's job is to tell the client things they don't want to hear, to question a client's representations if they appear inconsistent with other evidence, and to refuse to make arguments or take positions that they know to be frivolous.

The opinion is all about the Court's loose "in common use" language and concludes that firearms in common use for lawfully purposes today cannot be banned. So, the federal assault weapons ban was constitutional when enacted but now that it has lapsed would no longer be constitutional.

(This analysis assumes that PA should have 2 D senators. Given that it's currently 1-1, it would switch to 2-2, and the law would cause no net gain for either party.)

I think this law would end up helping Republicans more than Democrats. In NY, IL, PA, and AZ, the state minus the city would likely elect 2 Rs, netting Rs 8 more senate seats. Ds would likely gain two senate seats for Los Angeles (remainder of CA wouldn't flip), Houston, and San Antonio.

The classic England experience would be Argentina scoring in stoppage time; England being unable to create any offense in extra time because they've taken off so many offensive players; and then Harry Kane putting the decisive penalty kick over the bar.

Easy to count to five on that, right? Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh will vote to invalidate. (Kavanaugh based on his DC Circuit opinion; the others based on their past 2A votes.) And Barrett hasn't shown much tendency to vote differently than those four in 2A cases.

There may also be some indirect effects of things like Medicaid work requirements and the BBB provisions that caused, e.g., NY to kick 450k low-income people off the state's Essential Plan, in the form of hospitals raising rates charged to insurance companies to cover for costs of the uninsured.

Well, it remains possible this wouldn't be happening if there hadn't also been several major disruptions to the ACA marketplaces. E.g., letting enhanced subsidies lapse, removing the tax liability cap, and banning subsidies for certain lawful immigrants.

Does seem potentially bad for morale to look so afraid of their opponent. I would have expected the team to issue the typical "we feel confident playing whatever team USMNT puts on the field," while complaining/having UEFA complain behind he scenes.

In Maine, the deadline to declare as a write-in candidate in the general election is in late August (see link below). Voters can rank a single write-in. I hope people unable to vote for Platner would consider voting for an acceptable write-in, rather than leaving their ballot blank.
