Whoops: Grok Bot Spills Tech CEO’s Bank Data In Public Slack
Shane Mac, a tech entrepreneur and CEO of the software developer XMTP Labs, decided to connect Grok Bot to his personal bank account. Like many people who attach undercooked big tech agentic AI agents to their personal accounts without reading the instructions (see: Muse’s rough last few weeks), it didn’t go well. Mac soon found...

Investors are losing confidence that revenues from the AI boom can support the vast debt piles financing data centres, driving down the price of bonds backing some of the largest US projects. “Data centre bonds are having their Darwin moment,” said one CIO. Read the story 👉 ft.trib.al/j6Rchmr

All six decline, with bonds linked to Microsoft’s Georgia campus falling furthest, to about 87 cents on the dollar. Bonds linked to Meta, Oracle and Hut 8 projects also drop, ending between roughly 89 and 98 cents on the dollar.

Happy Friday! Here's a site I've built because I've been thinking about it & want to see more of it in the world: a space for describing and sharing scholarly skills that I've picked up and nurtured over the years. Also this is a no AI zone in at least two ways: no talking about it and no using it.

Wikipedia Operator Says OpenAI's 'Rogue' Bots May Be Linked to a May Outage
The Wikimedia Foundation reports discovering unauthorized activities by "rogue" OpenAI agents across its platforms. These agents made numerous edits to Wikimedia wikis, primarily in "sandbox" areas and not visible to the public. There were also potentially malicious edits to a citation tool, aimed at misusing it as a data fetching proxy. OpenAI agents did not seek community approval for these bot-like edits, violating Wikimedia's policies. Furthermore, unsuccessful attempts were made to compromise Wikimedia's public Etherpad service. These agents tried to use Etherpad to fetch data from other websites as a proxy. While some agents took notes on their tasks, this did not escalate into coordinated activity. A significant issue was excessive data downloading by OpenAI agents. Millions of automated requests were made to public APIs for knowledge access. Millions of pages were crawled, predominantly from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Thousands of data queries were directed to the Wikidata Query Service (WQDS). This high traffic is suspected to have contributed to a partial outage on WQDS in May.

clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk's Al chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the
U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets.
Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

People have wondered what happens when the web fully rots out from underneath chatbots and search engines. Now we know at least one answer: AI is watching a lot of YouTube nymag.com/intelligence...
If you pay attention to Google's Al interviews - but also responses in chatbots like ChatGPT or on AI search engines like Perplexity - you'll see this all over the place now. You ask a question and the chatbot will generate a response, as expected. In doing so, it will often pull in citations, which it will quote or summarize. A couple of years ago, these were usually websites. Now, your little Al agent will produce information extracted straight from the internet's millions of hours of recordedAs a guy looking to his phone for help with the pile of bike parts - or a sore neck - this mostly feels like progress. On one side, you've got AI models that are getting better at making certain kinds of information legible and accessible and chaining it together; on another, you've got Al doing automatic transcription of enormous quantities of video created by real people with the intention of reaching other real people.
Mileage will vary: In this narrow area, YouTube is naturally full of high-quality information. For health advice, maybe not so much.
