And to be clear, Stephens County went 81% Trump and 82% for the congressman who voted for this mess. I'm sorry for everyone who didn't vote for it, but everyone who did can eat shit and die. app.enhancedvoting.com/results/publ...

Seriously—in 2026, those CG animals were the best anyone could come up with for a Spielberg summer tentpole blockbuster, the very state-of-the-art?! Anyway, I'm not sorry I watched it. I just wish Spielberg had taken a real swing at making us BELIEVE again.

I would say this scene snippet was the only moment in DISCLOSURE DAY that even remotely approximated the old Spielberg magic, but it points to another problem: the CG animals were garbage! bsky.app/profile/cult...

Worst of all, almost as an afterthought, an actual alien is revealed in-studio, with all the gravitas of a youtube unboxing.
from a Progressive ad: An older man clarifying with an influencer, "This is just you opening a box of sneakers."

And instead of a quasi-religious set-piece like the close encounter of the third kind at Devil's Tower, DISCLOSURE DAY's climax is… the leaking of the thumb-drive videos from a broadcast network local affiliate (not only underwhelming, but absurd at any time and quaintly anachronistic right now).

city trees @citytrees.bsky.social · 14h
Instead of close encounters, though, DISCLOSURE DAY gives us a MacGuffin—a backpack full of thumb drives with top-secret archival footage we only occasionally glimpse some character watching on a screen. That makes everything feel so much smaller and less immediate.

CE is a genuine masterpiece of mystery, wonder, & awe for the ages. I found it nearly as entrancing & moving now as I did when I first saw it as a child. It would have been fascinating to see what Spielberg could do with so much more filmmaking experience, a much bigger budget, & industry advances.

Spielberg delivers vivid and convincing close encounters of the first and second kinds that lead to a culmination in the third through the potent recurring image of Devil's Tower and the haunting, unforgettable five notes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxp3...

DD isn't a sequel; more a revisiting by Spielberg at a very different point in his life and career, in a world that has also changed profoundly in the nearly half-century that has passed. I actually rewatched CE3K to check my memories, and found it even more superior than I expected.

Watched DISCLOSURE DAY. Found it enjoyable & engaging as I watched. I wouldn't discourage anyone from seeing it. But a few things nagged at me. The more I thought about them, the more negative they turned my opinion. First, I think it's fair to compare this to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.

The Crazification factor breaks down here because it's mainly about candidate quality (or lack thereof) and doesn't account for material consequences of disastrous policies.

Happy Saturday, everyone! Poor Bambam got his walk in heavy rain this morning because I had no idea how long it would last. It's already over for now, but supposed to be off-and-on all day. I hope everyone in Isaias's path is okay, and also those who are dealing with snow!

Because he's one of the only people standing next to a Republican going, "this person is a piece of shit, I don't respect him, neither should you, he's fucking evil and he needs to go, and I don't care if it makes me sound rude saying it" LIKE EVERY DEMOCRAT SHOULD BE DOING??? MAYBE???

Also I know what to expect this time, so I'm not getting angrier and angrier as the story veers away from what I hoped for in directions I wouldn't prefer. The horror angle is there, but it was always going to be first and foremost a Green Lantern story, not DC ZOMBIES. Still fun Halloween reading!

Now when I come to a filler or underwhelming issue, I just finish it and move on to the next at no further cost. There are a lot of splash pages, spreads, and "widescreen" effects, so they read too quickly for me to get very annoyed at even a bad one.

Made it to the halfway point of BLACKEST NIGHT. I'm enjoying it more this time. When I was buying each issue as it was released at $4 a pop, it was easy to feel frustrated, disappointed, or even cheated whenever one didn't seem worth the wait or money.

Thank you Henry! Sometimes it's not so easy. What I thought should happen was, "America should not drive off a cliff by electing Trump again." Now what is happening is, "Welp, America drove off a cliff." It's hard to live in that. It's hard to survive driving off a cliff.

…where the MAGA right (very much including Collins) is pushing ALL KINDS of horrendous "reforms" rooted in Trumpy election conspiracy theories, he was drawing a hard firewall line he could defend, in terms even a low-info voter could understand, against that encroachment.

Amid all the enjoyment of Ossoff's brutal slapdowns of Mike Collins in last night's debate, I'm seeing an undercurrent in replies of wet-blankets acting pissy about his "voter ID" remark. It wasn't my favorite thing he said, but in the context of a political debate in Georgia…
