Anyway all of this is to say 1. Caves of Qud is an incredible game and 2. I hope the newly announced Qud expansion featuring playable plants includes Carts for immobile plant friends and perhaps even an "Immobile" defect available to players that requires their use.

I ended up having to write a new C# component for an equipment behavior that interacted with the Brain to switch the Mobile flag when an associated item was equipped/unequipped, then set the Cart to use that component in its XML. Again, the code was all really simple and clean once I understood.

The logic around the "Mobile" flag is core enough to creatures that it's not handled like most other states. Instead, all of its logic is handled by a special code component of each creature called the "Brain". Haddas couldn't move because they couldn't think about moving (except when flying).

So "rooted" wasn't actually relevant; I needed my new item to override the "Mobile" flag which was set to false for "rooted plants". For a lot of flags and other values like this, the item configuration in XML can directly specify an override/augment to the equipping creature's values, but not here.

The "rooted" status applied to rooted plants, which gives them a big bonus to resisting forced movement, goes away if they do move or equip something in their roots slot (i.e. the pot). However, the rooted status is not what prevents them from moving. This is why I said "immobile plant" previously.

Also, making the Cart work at all was something of a journey. Qud's code, as visible from a modding perspective, is really clean and well-organized, but the specific implementation of rooted plants was a bit unintuitive and took some digging (NPI) to figure out.

I haven't published it anywhere as I didn't do any art and I didn't delve into how to add the item into appropriate random locations and merchant inventories; I just wished an instance of the Cart in and gave it to Haddas to continue our adventures.

To get around this, I ended up making a tiny mod that added in a single new item, a Cart. Plants have a "roots" item slot in place of feet, which has a single item type, the "clay pot", that can be equipped in it. My Cart item went in the same slot and made an immobile plant mobile.

Then I went underground for the first time since recruiting Haddas. It was a busy, tight layer so I didn't notice they had stopped moving at first. In Qud, flying only works on the surface. You can't fly underground. I accidentally trapped Mayor Haddas in a hostile, sunless space far from home.

If you know Qud well, you may already see the flaw in my plan. But for a while I was delighted to have a sapient tree following me and slamming into my enemies with its giant trunk. Haddas doesn't have any real combat skills, but they do have raw strength and toughness on par with the Ape God.

However, I learned thanks to the wiki that the status that makes Haddas immobile, which is a tag properly called "rooted plant", has a way around it: an immobile plant can still fly, if it has the ability to. So I gave Haddas a pair of mechanical wings and off we went.

In my second extended game of Caves of Qud, since I found myself with an abundance of a requisite reputation, on a lark I recruited Mayor Haddas of Ezra. Haddas is a tree. They cannot move.

Not to just say that 4e once again hit it on the money, but the idea of "Points of Light" is to center literally both of these as the main dynamic of the setting, right? Like, it's more or less completely uncritical, but that IS the idea nonetheless.

They'd've replaced his whole body if it would've improved performance. If that's how you judge a man -- by performance -- then eventually it's not about people but upgrades, versions, functionality...

We don't live in slop world because of AI, we live in slop world because the purpose of everything is to generate a return on investment for capital. We evaluate everything along metrics designed to serve that purpose over any other. AI is just the best way we found of optimizing for these metrics.

I don’t really get ubi—in order for it not to devolve into inflation you’d need such a robust system of price controls you might as well just have a command economy

Unfortunately I don't think the first thing really happened unless people weren't paying attention because it was part of the advertising for the movie (some theaters apparently even labeled what ending they were playing)

Marxist education has been so impoverished and suppressed for so long that it's hard to find anyone doing this kind of work in English, but I think it's really important. The appeal of Marxism is that it has practical large-scale answers and we have to actually deliver that.

His third part (thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2026/08/15/p...) lays out his own theory, which isn't some revolutionary new idea but rather a particular, smart synthesis of certain factors.

His first two parts review common mainstream (thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2026/07/31/t...) and heterodox (thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2026/08/03/t...) theories - if you've studied Marxist theory none of this will be new but they're good summaries.

I don't remember! But it looks like fittingly this is the last version of that chart
A pie chart (not made by me) titled "JKT Books by JFK Mentions (through 11/22/63)". 50.8% of said books have mentioned the JFK assassination; 14.8%, JFK Himself; 8.2%, the Kennedy family; and 26.2%, none of the above.

there was also a chart tracking how many books feature references to (in order of least precedence to most) the Kennedy family, JFK, and the JFK assassination itself but I'm not sure if it's still being updated
