My Internet is out until tomorrow afternoon sometime, so I’m watching DVDs on one of my consoles. I forgot how good The Mothman Chronicles are. It’s been a favorite for years, but it’s been a few since I saw it last. So good.

Dr. Margaret Allen: the first woman to perform a heart transplant (Stanford, 1985). • 1985: Founded the first heart transplant program, U. of Washington Med Center & served as its director until 1996 • 1994: First woman president, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) #WomenInSTEM #MedSky
A black-and-white portrait of Dr. Margaret Allen (born 1948), the pioneering American cardiothoracic surgeon who became the first woman to perform a heart transplant and founded the heart transplant program at the University of Washington Medical Center. She is positioned in the center of the frame against a softly blurred, natural outdoor background of dense foliage or hedges. She wears a dark top over a light-colored, knit turtleneck collar that frames her neck. Her long, wavy hair is pulled back. She wears large, thin-rimmed circular aviator-style eyeglasses. Dr. Allen looks directly forward into the camera with a neutral, calm, and composed expression, conveying a sense of quiet determination, focus, and intellectual strength. The composition uses natural, soft lighting that minimizes harsh shadows on her face. The overall mood is serious, professional, and dignified, underscoring her historic significance as a trailblazer for women in medicine and surgery.

Ann Bancroft: the first woman to reach the North Pole on foot* in 1986 (dog-assisted). • 1993: First woman to reach both the North & South Poles on foot (S. Pole unassisted) • 2001: First woman to ski across Antarctica with Norwegian Liv Arnesen Born #OTD in 1955. *walked, snowshoed and/or skied
A close-up photograph of the rugged, joyful countenance of American polar explorer Ann Bancroft (born September 29, 1955), the first woman to cross the ice to both the North and South Poles. Set against a stark, high-key backdrop of a vast, white Arctic or Antarctic ice expanse under an overcast, pale sky, she looks directly at the camera with a wide, radiant smile that crinkles her eyes. Her weather-beaten face is flushed pink from the intense polar cold. Her dark, graying hair is windblown and messy, held back by dark, reflective sunglasses resting atop her head. She wears heavy polar expedition gear, including a dark navy jacket with a thick, fluffy brown fur-trimmed hood framing her face, layered over a bright purple collar, a red knit undershirt, and a visible zipper. The composition centers on her resilient expression, conveying a triumphant, adventurous, and authentic mood that highlights her historical significance as a barrier-breaking explorer.

Letitia Chitty (d. #OTD in 1982) was a pioneering British structural engineer & mathematician. A master of stress analysis, she spent her career mathematically determining the "breaking points" of complex structures, ranging from #WWI combat aircraft to major international dams. #WomenInSTEM
A monochromatic sepia-toned photograph of British structural engineer and mathematician Letitia Chitty (July 15, 1897 – September 29, 1982), a premier pioneer of 20th-century stress analysis. Positioned in a front-facing, head-and-shoulders composition, she looks directly at the camera with a sober, neutral expression and tight lips. Her dark hair is parted neatly down the center and pulled back into a simple bun. She is dressed in a dark blazer or coat layered over a high-collared, patterned blouse or knit sweater visible at the neckline. The background consists of soft, textured drapery in warm, out-of-focus sepia tones. The tight framing captures her sharp, determined demeanor, evoking a serious and intellectually focused mood. The vintage composition highlights her immense historical significance as the first woman to graduate with first-class honors in Cambridge’s Mechanical Sciences Tripos.

Someone leaves. We watch until they vanish. Even after. Maybe that's the most human thing we do.
Photo by Emmanuel Codden. A black and white photograph of a brick facade seen straight on. Rows of white-framed windows sit in stone surrounds between pale horizontal bands. At an upper left window, a man in a short-sleeved white shirt and tie leans on the sill beside a flower box, gazing down. Some windows open onto dark rooms, others hold sheer curtains. Iron scroll anchors dot the wall. The base is rough stone with small square windows.

A black-and-white historical photograph of pioneering geophysicist and space physicist Marcia Neugebauer (born September 27, 1932) working at her desk during the mid-20th century. Sitting in an office setting, she leans forward slightly over her desk, looking directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent, and focused expression. She has short, bobbed light hair and wears a short-sleeved, collared white button-up blouse adorned with subtle vertical embroidered details down the front. In her right hand, she holds a pencil over large documents and charts with plotted scientific data curves spread out on the desk before her. A black-and-white portrait of Lottie Dod (Charlotte Dod, 1871–1960), the legendary English athlete who remains the youngest singles champion in Wimbledon history, winning her first title in 1887 at age 15. Captured from the waist up, Dod stands at a slight three-quarter angle facing right while looking directly forward. Her expression is calm, earnest, and determined, featuring a soft mouth and steady, dark eyes. Her dark hair is pinned up neatly under a rigid, light-colored cloth cap with a short brim, sitting straight on her head. She is dressed in traditional Victorian tennis attire, wearing a structured, high-collared white blouse with voluminous leg-of-mutton sleeves and pleated detailing across the chest. Her waist is tightly cinched by a broad, dark belt that fastens over her dark skirt. In the lower right foreground, she cradles a vintage wooden tennis racket with a distinct asymmetric, flat-topped frame and tight natural gut strings, which extends diagonally across her body. The background is a soft, mottled gray studio backdrop, drawing all focus to her silhouette. The lighting is soft and even, highlighting the texture of her clothing and her complexion. The composition captures the classic, grainy texture of late-19th-century photography, creating a dignified, historic mood that underscores her pioneering status as an early sports icon.

A close-up, black-and-white portrait of Dr. Ida Noddack (1896–1978), the pioneering German chemist and physicist who co-discovered the chemical element rhenium and was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission in 1934. Dr. Noddack is positioned at a slight three-quarter angle while turning her face toward the camera, establishing a direct connection with the viewer. Her light-colored hair is styled neatly, swept up and away from her face in a soft, textured wave arrangement typical of the mid-20th century. Her expression is composed and contemplative, marked by a subtle, knowing half-smile that conveys an aura of quiet confidence, intelligence, and academic resolve. She wears a simple, dark-toned V-neck blouse or jacket, drawing focus directly to her facial features. The portrait is set against a completely dark, minimalist background devoid of any objects or setting context, creating a formal studio aesthetic. The lighting is soft yet deliberate, illuminating the left side of her face to emphasize her expression while casting gentle shadows across her right cheek. The composition relies on high-contrast monochromatic tones and a grainy, vintage texture characteristic of early photographic film, reinforcing its archival and historic nature. The overall mood is dignified and deeply intellectual, honoring her enduring legacy as a foundational pioneer of nuclear and atomic science.
