By Waymo's own figures, roughly 44% of its miles carry no passenger. Charge robotaxis a fee for empty miles, highest in busy zones, and spend it on transit and safer streets. Empty cars should pay for the space they use. www.smartgrowthamerica.org/knowledge-hu...

Pretty easy to pooh pooh that song as whatever, but there’s the line "God bless little children while they're still too young to hate” And there’s a fucking wisdom in there that I wish more people would *hear*.

In the shop today for a sales tasting and on the speakers came “Watermelon Wine” — credit to the salesperson who called out as a Tom T. Hall song, and then we talked about how that song is entirely just about how he came to write that song, and also that people think orange wines come from oranges.

CPI isn't a big deal unless you're one of those rare people who purchases medical care, vehicles, computers/software, or toys. Might also be a problem for people who earn money instead of already having money, but those people should really try having money instead.
By Chris Anstey, Senior Editor

Thanks for joining us today. Here are key takeaways from the September CPI report:
The headline CPI jumped by 0.6% compared with August, as expected by economists, and 3.7% on a year-on-year basis, marking an acceleration from 3.4% the previous month. More than half the monthly increase came from gasoline, which soared 9.1%.
The core CPI, stripping out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month, more than all but 11 of the 73 economists in Bloomberg’s survey had anticipated. The annual rate accelerated to 2.6%, the fastest pace since June. Increases were broad based, including recreation and used vehicles, airfares and medical care.
Outsize gains in some categories pointed to evidence of both the AI effect and impact from tariffs. On a year-on-year basis, computers and software prices saw record increases, at 9.7% and 28.4% respectively. Toys, up an annual 6.6%, jumped the most since 1988.
Inflation continues to wallop workers. Today’s numbers mean real average hourly earnings contracted by 0.7% last month, the most since May. Real earnings have been shrinking for six straight months now, the longest string since the 2021-23 cost-of-living surge.
The odds of an interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve in two weeks soared after the release, with Treasuries plunging, stocks sliding and the dollar rising. Two-year yields were up about 12 basis points as of 9:32 a.m. in New York, the S&P 500 opened down 0.4% and the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index hit its highest since May 2025.

What made me think about this was a hockey teammate posted in the chat: “Oh no my pants” And I was like “Is the category “Awkward things to blurt out on the airplane”?” But anyway he and his pants are gonna be fine. They just need a good ol’ craft hour!

Debuted my new hockey stick today (same model as before, just a couple years newer and 75 rather than 85 flex). Took a little while to get used to the lower weight and flex, but hey, wound up with the assist on new teammate’s first goal, so that’s pretty sweet.

What’s especially astonishing here is like — they *know* this is going to make automobile traffic much, much, much worse (doubling travel times in some cases) and their heads are so far up their asses they can’t even see the light of day. “Let’s just take that money and build more lanes!” Ugh.

But back to the point — my watch is half as old as the entire damn Apple Watch lineup?? My gosh, that’s absolutely wild. How is the battery even intact? (I did have another 6 once upon a time where the battery puffed up and dislodged the watch face.)

Chuck Smith @chucklessmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I’ve always worn fairly large gloves (15s) so the cuff actually covers the watch and I’ve never had anything remotely threatening to the watch, as it turns out.

Lest that sound excessive, it’s worth pointing out a thing you probably don’t know about: The Dexcom G7 CGM connects directly to the watch so you don’t need a phone to monitor blood glucose. This matters because in the course of a hockey game I do not have my phone on me. But the watch keeps track.

So I just had a tire-screeching moment while listening to Accidental Tech Podcast: *the current release of the Apple Watch is Series *12*??* I have a Series 6 and an SE 2. (Yes, I have two. The SE 2 refurb was so much less expensive than just getting a new one, so I alternate them).

New twig has arrived. The boxes they ship these things in are hilariously scaled: 11 1/2” x 3” x 67 3/4”. It’s been a hot second since I used a 75 flex. It is light and sprightly, though, so I’d like to think we’re kindred spirits.

Whole Foods had an a la carte pizza slice today that (I assume this is related to the start of the NFL season?) was jalapeno popper style and it was actually the best single slice of pizza I’ve ever gotten, and that’s coming from a pepperoni or margherita fan.
