The Baader Meinhof Gang aka Red Army Faction were active in Germany from 1970 to 1998. Luke Haines, who turns 59 today, made his first Auteurs album in 1993. And his new solo album is good! Anyway, his 33 years beats RAF’s 28. But his best album was about them anyway. Here’s what I wrote about it.

Luke Haines would remain my favorite ’90s Britpop auteur (small praise, but still) even if that wasn’t his primary band’s name.

The one country crossover from 1981 I'd call as good or better than "Seven Year Ache" (which I love), for what it's worth, is Terri Gibbs's "Somebody's Knockin." (Not quite a country chart-topper -- got to #8, apparently, then #13 on the Hot 100.)

Dunno about "Born in the USA," but I've always assumed that Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon" a year later was inspired by that song by Charlie Daniels (who definitely had his moments, no matter how despicable his politics were overall. Seems to have started out liberal though, circa "Uneasy Rider.")

Oh well. I should maybe revisit. Always liked "Roam," always found "Love Shack" annoying. (I love that band through Mesopotamia or so.) Something about the grain or tone of Roland Gift's voice always bugged me too. But maybe I'd think differently if I gave it more time. One of these days, maybe...

Michael Yonkers (who would’ve turned 79 today) slashes speakers and screams and moans in St. Paul in 1968; Simply Saucer explore outer space via Moog-metalloid future songs in Ontario in 1973; Kenneth Higney roughs up his lo-fi Shaggs-ish proto-anti-folk with feedback bursts in New Jersey in 1976.

Tiffany Darwish, who turned 55 today, was still a teenager when I wrote up her second album, which in more ways than one wasn’t nearly as successful as her first one. I didn’t predict her future very well: She would never chart again. Maybe if eventually she'd gone country, she’d’ve had more luck.
