Not that you asked me, but I’ll volunteer: it’s worked great for me. Doc put me on it for weight and blood sugar; I’m down 40lbs (252 in feb 2024, 212 as of last week). Still eat what I love, I just eat less. Worst side effect so far has been the sulfur burps…

We’ve had a blast with her family this week. It’s so different from what I experienced, but I remind myself that this is what my son will grow up remembering and it makes me so happy to watch. But my God,what I wouldn’t give for one more of my Grandmother’s Thanksgivings, with my family and my son.

Then Mom passed in ‘23. This isn’t my first thanksgiving without her or her family. But it’s the first one where I’ve had the whole week off and spent it with my son and my wife’s family. It’s outside the experience I grew up with, but our boy is having the time of his life with his cousins.

My uncle passed suddenly in March, from a brain bleed. My grandmother passed in July after battling COPD. Then Papaw passed in September after a bout with Alzheimer’s. It was a rough holiday that year, with all of them suddenly gone, but we made it through knowing my wife was pregnant with our son.

Dad & Papaw went hunting that morning. The cousins played ball out front. We ate a huge meal, napped & watched football, then leftovers for dinner. My uncle played “pull my finger” on my brother…all of it. It was damn near idyllic & we did it my whole life. Then, in 2018, my Mom’s whole family died.

1 stove, 2 fridges, and 9-12 people to cook for: my parents, me, my brother, my aunt/uncle/older cousin, my grandparents. Everything was timed to perfection to be ready simultaneously. Each dish better than the last. It was one of two times per year the whole family was together and we did it all:

I saw someone post about their grandmother’s cooking earlier and I wanted to chime in about my family thanksgiving memories. My grandmother was an amazing cook; this was always a great holiday in our family. And it wasn’t just how tasty the food was; it was the mastery of logistics she had.

File under “Dudes are weird”: at a birthday party for one of our 5 year old’s classmates this morning. All of the moms are talking in groups and all of the dads are just standing individually, just watching. It’s like these ladies married all of the shy dudes at the school dance (myself included).

At our 1st Boy Scouts mtg and it’s fascinating to watch the kids. My son’s group is 5 thru 10 y/o. Boys are bouncing around, constantly chattering, 0 focus. Girls are stock still, focused on the scoutmaster, answering his questions, totally zeroed in. It’s not surprising, just such a stark contrast.
