oh cool, I actually didn't know you could still retrieve your data via API even from a nuked account!

That feels difficult to communicate given that most people's accounts are hosted by Bluesky, who still have power over all your data and can take it away from you on a whim. If anything, atproto used wrong just puts all your eggs in a single basket with all the same issues as before.

If the general population had that kind of media literacy, engagement bait wouldn't be a thing in the first place

Speaking as someone who uses AI for coding daily… models absolutely solve problems. That doesn’t imply models have any kind of actual thought or intelligence - they don’t. But they do solve problems, often very well and with very little human direction.

For me those 2 things are very different. CSS-in-JS is a terrible bodge for people who feel the need to have all their code for a component in a single file. CSS modules is just normal CSS compiled to a normal CSS file that gets its class names automatically scoped to a component.

It’s hard to comprehend how a professional platform like GitHub ever started using CSS-in-JS at scale in the first place

As a user I love having my Mac in light mode 24/7 but I also love that many apps and websites let me individually toggle them into dark mode, and I often do. Flexibility is great!

I’m calling it now: the iPhone Duo isn’t going to sell particularly well. It might even flop. I think the target market is less than an iPhone Mini tbh. That doesn’t necessarily mean day 1 pre-orders won’t be high though.

Ok, what is the point then? Mine is that AI produces whatever the most common patterns are in its training data, which is essentially whatever’s been trending in the recent past, and that instantly dismissing any website that simply follows recent trends is just a bit silly really.

Where do you think Claude learnt to do that? UI design was converging on a pretty narrow set of standards and conventions that work and convert long before gen AI came along. Claude just does what’s most common amongst the real world data it was trained on.

Scrolling is janky with any non-Apple mouse, but when I used an MX 3 it turned out that installing and setting up the Logitech options app made it a lot better. I resent that I have to run a background app just to use a mouse though.

Alex @chromaticnova.com · 21/08/2026
Looks great! I don’t love those kind of tabs though. You can never see all the options at once, and I end up rarely using things that I have to scroll through sideways. It would be nice to be able to open up something to see all the options at once, and to be able to reorder them.

I always assumed a utopian world for most people is one where nobody ever needs to work again. I don’t think we achieve that without AI. But we do need to overcome the rapid concentration of wealth and power that AI is contributing towards.

I do agree that the public has a negative view of AI (and that this is a big problem), but I don’t think it is primarily caused by me or any other AI leader warning about AI’s risks. I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust. I think that ordinary people don’t trust companies, governments, or the tech industry and always suspect that we are cooking up some new way to screw them over. The causes of this go back decades and AI is just the latest iteration of it. I don’t think that a glitzy marketing campaign with a positive spin (which some have advocated that Anthropic do) is the way to win back that trust — at this point, saying that AI will cure cancer is more a cliche than it is inspiring, and most people think it is deceptive. The thing that will work is *actually curing cancer*. I think by far the most accurate criticism of AI companies including Anthropic is that we haven’t yet delivered on our big promises to benefit the world. That is totally on us, and I think it’s the criticism you should be making, instead of all this stuff about messaging and marketing.

What you're saying when you say "DEI" when universities say "EDI" (as happens here) and vice versa. And why it actually matters. The great majority of UK (esp. British) universities use "EDI" while US universities use "DEI". Is that "just" semantic, or does it matter? A thread. 🧵1/8

That implies there’s no such thing as good or bad design, which is objectively not true. It’s entirely possible for redesigns to be worse than their predecessors, or to make things worse for some people’s use cases even if they’re better for the majority.

Meta achieves roaring success by spamming their feeds with endless streams of inane brainrot drivel engagement bait. Bluesky shouldn’t be aspiring to that. Growth at all costs is a capitalist hellscape. It’s actually fine to just coast along.

If nobody had to work any more, I expect we’d value things like health and fitness, sports, games, cooking, creative arts, music, travel, and just spending time with other people. All of the things people already do for hobbies and self care, just more of it without work getting in the way.

Maybe “significant new products” isn’t where we’re headed, and “more niche bespoke products tailored to their users” is the actual outcome? I largely agree with you BTW. I just think framing things from a traditional capitalist mindset is a narrow way of looking at the potential for change.

Nobody *wants* poor quality things. They want value for money. Today’s “free market” does not gravitate towards value for money, it gravitates towards the opposite - value for shareholders, and few companies left selling decent stuff for a decent price even if you want it.
