What Will David Ellison Name His Mega Hollywood Studio?

THR: "Optically, nothing says “I bought and ingested iconic studios and now they’re just tiles on a screen in my holding company” like wiping out the studio names from the parent company’s business card." www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...

I mean, it's Paul Verhoeven. What did people expect? I don't blame Berkley for jumping at the opportunity. He was one of the hottest directors at the time. Also, the movie is fun as hell. Never let the naysayers win.

‘Showgirls’: The Gratuitous, Surreal Bomb That Was Maybe Brilliant

The reception to Paul Verhoeven’s lurid 1995 melodrama starring Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan and Gina Gershon was humiliating, but it’s since become a thought-provoking camp favorite.

It would be fun to hear Plato's commentary on Hegseth, who is still stuck in the cave looking at shadows while completely convinced he is living in reality.

'Unabomber' Director & Star Respond To Criticisms of Netflix Thriller Humanizing Ted Kaczynski

Did anyone watch Unabomber? It's getting lit up in reviews, but the film does offer a compelling angle on Kaczynski. Looking at how these psychological tests at Harvard may have had a lasting impact is well worth looking at. My latest at MovieWeb: movieweb.com/unabomber-di...

Late night musical. Prep for a podcast that will be recorded this week with @brandondavis87.bsky.social This was one of Jack Warner's last productions, which was after he was finally out of Warner Bros. for good. He had long been drawn to musicals, dating back to the Busby Berkeley days on the lot

From 1951: "In The Day the Earth Stood still, producer Julian Blaustein and director Robert Wise have a highly exploitable, suspensefully entertaining drama that will ride the crest of the current cycle of science films with the ease of a space ship."

A couple years back, I was at an antique store and found an old book titled McCarthy by Roy Cohn…the nameplate in the book belonged to a Milwaukee lawyer by the name of Urban Krier, who worked with McCarthy. Inside the book sat a letter from McCarthy’s wife, Jean, to Krier

I highly recommend the new biography of Roy Cohn. So much of the present is connected to his past. I’ve long felt that more people need to understand this guy to truly understand people like Donald Trump. I’m happy the book became a quick bestseller. chrisyogerst.substack.com/p/roy-cohn-l...

...I asked what do I do when I get to a major film like Casablanca? Won't readers expect a long story? He said no, only write about it insofar as the brothers were involved or talked about it. That saved me so much time and anguish of what to include/cut, etc. It also kept the narrative moving.

Great review by @keithob.bsky.social of what looks to be a fascinating look at the Hindenburg. O'Brien's criticism of the author's long deviations from the story are a pet-peeve of mine as well. When I was writing my book on The Warner Brothers, I got great advice from biographer Pat McGilligan...

The quick collapse here is curious, to say the least. Minimal concessions were made. I suppose the “victory” is that there are (kind of) enforceable penalties if the agreement terms are not met? Media consolidation is never promising, but here’s to hoping that production will boom… (gulp...)
