3/5. A taught thriller that sweeps you up in its rushing narrative, it might be light on characterization, but has chills that crawl up the back of your mind like a spider. Short, but good stuff

3/5. Like yeah, I get it, but it's fine. It's basically the same scene repeated several times and amounting to not much. The focus is more on the nuances of translation and the relationship between to colonial and the colonized. If you're looking for a moving relationship though, look elsewhere

5/5. @moryan.bsky.social does an excellent job spinning together anecdotes and keen observation to paint a picture of a system driven by greed and ego. The real meat and potatoes is in the second half, where ideas are put forth for how to create change. It's all good and you should all read it

3/5. Stapling together HG Wells War of the Worlds and The Time Machine (along with a nod to Jules Verne) this novel is strongest in its first and third acts, act two dragging too much despite moments of thrills. Further, the main character is just...so boring

4/5. I don't think there's anything I can say about this series that hasn't already been said. Martha Wells has created a truly delightful and sometimes painfully relatable character, dropping them into a galaxy of danger and empathy. Good stuff

4/5. While populated by engaging characters and intriguing world-building, this tightly paced novella doesn't do much to change my opinion that fantasy and noir don't really mix that well. If you're looking for fantasy, it's a good read; if you're looking for some noir, maybe give it a skip

5/5. A beautiful continuation of Sara Gran's existential noir thrillers, following hard-bitten PI Claire DeWitt as she searches for the truth at the heart of not one, but three mysteries, one that goes to her origin as a detective.

Sara Gran might be one of the most underappreciated US authors working today. These quotes are from a book she published in 2018 and they feel so relevant and straight to the heart in a world flooded by LLMs and "AI"
Imagine taking a knife. Imagine taking a nice big kitchen knife and putting it right here—(indicates central torso). Can you imagine that? Are you all with me? Now imagine taking that razor and you cut. You cut and you cut and you cut—and it hurts like hell, it hurts just like you think it does—and you bleed until you find something inside you—until you find something good enough and pure enough and broken enough that you—that this is the very best part of you, this is the essence of you, this is all of your pain and all of your joy compressed into this little, this bloody little thing, like an organ, like a material manifestation of your soul—you cut and you cut until you find this secret thing, this nameless thing, and at great, you know, great personal fucking expense you cut some more and you tear this fucking thing out of yourself, and you leave yourself bloody and raw, and hopefully everyone else in the room too, hopefully you are all in this together, all of you, you know, traumatized or enlightened or whatever by this.

And that thing we find, that thing we find when we cut, is the best thing we have. It's all we leave behind when we’re gone. And your client wants to use it to do the single most boring, useless thing on earth: make money.

3/5. A really good first novel from a celebrated comic book writer. Very quickly paced, with fun characters, but somewhat lacking in bite. The main villain also feels pretty unremarkable

5/5. I've said it before and I'll say it until I'm dead: Tad Williams is the only author worthy of being called "the modern Tolkien." Expansive storytelling, densely layered mysteries, and not a single character who feels less than three dimensional

A screenshot from an article about how Michael Jackson was a pedophile where an ad from a Micheal Jackson biopic has appeared over a paragraph from the article.

The article reads:

Skeptics also point to Robson changing his story.

He was defense witness No. 1 in 2005. But he realized that he couldn’t stay quiet anymore. Although he’d been in love with Jackson, he could no longer defend his abuser. And so the price of coming out is huge. You have to tell your parents you were lying to them.
