*NEW VIDEO* An AI pendant aiming to simulate friendship has been the subject of the largest ad campaign in the history of the New York City subway. Let's talk about it. youtu.be/aTgdmqS_OH0

Happy Easter! Christ is risen, and has conquered death so that we might have eternal life. What a blessing it is to be alive, even when it's hard.

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 01/04/2025

my plan is to try to vlog at least a week of making my album, then maybe 1-2 weeks later, follow up on the stuff i brought up in the vlog previously. my eye problems make things harder though. if my eyes still have too much trouble handling it, i guess i'll have to abruptly stop.

i think my upcoming album is somewhere around 60% done. the songwriting is almost complete, so a lot of the work left is in recording, editing, and hiring session musicians. definitely no final tracklist yet!

i was wondering when it makes sense to make a creative project that has a net negative effect on my happiness, here's what i came up with: 1. if doing nothing is worse 2. if the project benefits others 3. if i can figure out how to start enjoying it more 4. if finishing it brings enough happiness

i've been keeping a list of things to look forward to. i divide it into stuff in the very near future, and stuff that's further out. i highly recommend, it's good for mental health

i was thinking about what my favorite albums of the 2010s are, so i went through my ratings and WOW there are so many albums i really like. i was not expecting this many

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 07/01/2025

i wanna get better at giving feedback to art. a lot of feedback i see people give others is emphatic, but i can't do that a lot of the time. i can recognize positive qualities, but i often don't have strong opinions. i always aim to be 100% real, but i don't want my feedback to feel too lukewarm

i've definitely felt a loss of color in my life this year. i don't think i have depression. i have hope that unless something catastrophic happens in 2025, that things can be better, and perhaps this can be solved through strategy and willpower, God willing

this year i’ve been living as if i’m christopher tom. but it’s time to truly be Christopher Tom

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 06/12/2024

i put together a list of 20 health-related triggers getting in the way of me making stuff: 6 specific to making music, 3 specific to making videos, and 11 that apply to both. now i am going to try harder to find workarounds/solutions so i can do more things.

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 02/12/2024

this is something i think about quite a bit: the Shadow Audience. i think the percentages of people who leave comments on art tend to be in the single digits, if even that. for music, it seems to be well below 1%. we can never truly know the full scope of how our work resonated

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 30/11/2024

i really should get into the habit of immediately taking a picture of my amp settings (and pedal settings, if applicable) after i record guitar/bass

i'm not entirely opposed to AI, there are good uses for it, but i find it revolting when i come across something that is so clearly AI generated with little or no human revision. i think what i hate the most about it is that it feels insulting

070

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 21/11/2024

i'm not 100% sure on this, but it seems like the best kind of culture for art/artists is one where "unsolicited" constructive criticism is the norm

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 21/11/2024

i just did the calculations: on approximately 58% of the days this year, i got 6 hours of sleep or more. i will try to get that number up 💪

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 15/11/2024

i've been thinking about what makes a song banal and trite, and my current takeaway is, there's no one specific thing you can generally blame for banality. the best heuristic for banality i can think of is, "could this have been written by anyone?" and the further from "yes," the less banal

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 14/11/2024

i didn't give it much thought until recently, but it's cool when songs go into half-time. i don't know many examples though ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION - Re:Re: Cartel - Honestly μ's - Snow Halation (i'm not sure if MCR - Helena counts?)

Christopher Tom @christophertom.com · 14/11/2024

perhaps i will use this platform for miscellaneous type posts...
