Sometimes a breathtaking story just falls into your lap and, well, takes your breath away. This one by Sydney Paige Guerrero is a gorgeous, bittersweet homage to portal fantasies and mothers and daughters and needing and being needed. If you liked Every Heart a Doorway, this is right up your alley.

I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom? You were never a parent at all You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

Go to taekwondo, work on forms and kicks and breaking boards, maybe some sparring, get some good endorphins? Or sit outside with a pint of cider on a glorious early autumn evening, one of the last of the season, listening to the birds sing and the leaves rustle in the trees? Cannot decide!

Fingers crossed that somebody will buy it!! I don't submit very much poetry, and it's been a while since I've written any. In any case, most of my poems are a) formal verse, b) love poems, and c) not speculative.

Doing a bit of light housekeeping today and I counted nine physical books on my shelf that contain stories by me! That's not a ton, but it's sure not nothing. 🙃 I'll have to print out my online publications and put them in a binder, I think, just so I can have The Complete Works at my fingertips.

TIL! By the way, I'm really enjoying these little tidbits. I never lived in Russia long term (two academic years, 1995-1996 in Smolensk and 2000-2001 in Moscow), and I'm unlikely to ever return, considering the current state of things. But your posts are sparking some strong memories. 💜

I say "I had blood work done" but tbh I have no idea what it was for. I was a university student, and I guess I had to have some kind of physical exam to stay in the dorm? Or maybe to use the cafeteria? I remember the clinic being kind of the stuff of nightmares, and the tests practically medieval.

I had blood work done in Smolensk in 1995 and they literally took a scalpel that was sitting in a jar of (presumably) alcohol and cut my finger open, then squeezed it. Yikes.

Good question, & esp. important for accessibility, etc. I think Chromebooks only work if connected? I could be wrong. My gut feeling is that this is a stopgap classroom solution as stuff is being figured out, & it's what works for these particular teachers. (I.e., it's not implemented school-wide.)

Christine Hanolsy (she/her) @christinehanolsy.com · 24/09/2026
I think they do them in class? So no access to devices during the exam/essay. I agree that it's not the right long term solution - there are so many things that need to be addressed on so many different levels...

At our high school, some teachers are reverting to handwritten essays, blue books, & Scantron because of flagrant AI abuse. I agree that learning to use tech appropriately is important, but I'm also glad teachers are addressing this issue. I wish them luck reading my kids' handwriting, though. 😆

Per Texas media, it’s looking like +100K registrations were affected. Secretary of State is saying that it shouldn’t affect voting.
We reached out to 24 counties today to see the extent of the problem. Here's what we got back:
Collin County - 40,000+
Travis County - 32,000
Brazoria County - 9,000+
Hays County - 8,100
Cameron County - 5,000
