Whilst being an influencer isn't something I could necessarily advise on, some people have become very successful and it has led onto a more traditional enterprise. Good luck to them I say. If life doesn't give you opportunity, you can try and make it (some of my ancestors were costermongers!)

Chris Swan @chrisswan.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
If you can't work for a gaffer, at least you know what you need to do to set yourself up. I do hear a lot of young people wanting to be influencers. They also need to understand monetisation and how that works. I honestly don't think that is taught at all ( I could be wrong though!)

One easy win IMO would be teaching entrepreneurial skills. If you want to be a plumber, a market trader, an artist, an online seller etc. you need to understand how to manage money and promote your enterprise. Business Studies isn't taught until KS4 and is optional.

I'm in schools every day. They are doing the best they can with what they have, it's what is on offer that's the problem. The number of NEETs is partly due to the failure of education to meet the needs of young people and the modern work landscape

Chris Swan @chrisswan.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
We write skills off as being less valuable - totally wrong in my opinion. I've taught some incredibly talented young people who have progressed to good jobs. I detest the classist assumption that only academic prowess matters. Teaching for its own sake and learning for the joy of it - wonderful idea

Schools and colleges need simple statements of "can do this", "knows that" etc. I have taught GNVQ and then BTEC with exams ( pretty pointless for most units), then no exams, then exams again. It's the educational policy fandango. Some kids do not do well in exams but can do other stuff really well.

Chris Swan @chrisswan.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Former NVQ assessor here - skills can be assessed if we define what we are looking for in competence. The National Occupational Standards did just that... And then it became far more complex by allowing organisations to define their own.

When I was in France the year before last, during yet another summer heatwave. There was a TV article about Parisian research exploring the microclimate beneath street and park trees. We need more of both. Paris always suffers as it's so far inland - like us in the Midlands.
