Naturally Stellar... #bird Steller's Jay

Pacific Northwest edition of the Steller's Jay. A corvidae with a crest, these blue and black birds are smart and noisy. Typically, several of them greet me every morning.

Farm cat preparing for the coming cold season... Mostly by sitting around and getting fat. Oh, and growing out a thicker coat. For #WhiskersWednesday.

Tabby farm cat is busy with winter prep. Eating everything in sight and growing more fur. It's a winning strategy.

Blackbird Morning! ...After days of dominance by Steller's Jays, this Saturday morning, the Red-Winged Blackbirds took over the place. #birdoftheday #pairs #wildlifephotography #nature #birds.

Photographed 26 September 2026, I knew the blackbirds were back at the farm from all the sweet songs (and a little less of Jays squawking). Jays are bigger and more aggressive but they do NOT want to be mobbed by Blackbirds! So they kept their distance for awhile. Safety in numbers...
Northern Oregon coast, Nikon D7200, 200mm F/5 1/640s ISO 2000, largely straight out of camera except for a cropping.

A mob of Red-winged Blackbirds were hungry enough to keep the Steller's Jays away for a little while. It's the numbers game...

Monday Morning First Bird... This is a very active time of year for Steller's Jays around here. They are first to appear every morning and dominate the scenery, although Red-winged Blackbirds and Eurasian Collared Doves give them some competition. #birds #BirdOfTheDay #wildlifephotography

The earlybird gets the seed...well, some of it. Steller's Jay, bold and blue, surveys its breakfast bounty.

Bird Couples' Breakfast --- Cropped from a single frame because these Steller's Jay pairs were just a little too far apart. #birds #wildlifephotography

Steller's Jays. 17 September 2026, northern Oregon coast. It's difficult to tell the boys and the girls apart with the Pacific Northwest version of these Corvidae but I tend to assume the one standing guard is the male.
This is a different pair from the previous frame. Both images were cropped from a single frame because these couples were maybe 10 feet apart.

The Joy of Food... and being first at the table. Steller's Jay, Monday 14 September 2026 #birds #nature #wildlifephotography

The bird is a Steller's Jay in the morning, exulting in the bounty of food which the day has brought forth. The Jay throws its head back to cram more nuts and fruit bits into its craw. Can a bird be any happier?

Breakfast Birds, Red-winged Blackbird and Band-tailed Pigeon (I think) #birds #BirdOfTheDay #ABCD & #RSTU Info in the ALT tag…

Red-winged Blackbird female and Band-tailed Pigeon, first at breakfast. Ident is tentative: I have a hard time telling Band-tailed Pigeons and Eurasian collared doves apart at this angle. The doves have more bulbous heads, though. Eurasian collared doves are also half the size of Band-tailed Pigeons but I can't tell that from here, without two together.

VERY WET Steller's Jays, since we're getting an early dose of Autumn. #birds #nature
