Blackbird Morning! ...After days of dominance by Steller's Jays, this Saturday morning, the Red-Winged Blackbirds took over the place. #birdoftheday #pairs #wildlifephotography #nature #birds.

Photographed 26 September 2026, I knew the blackbirds were back at the farm from all the sweet songs (and a little less of Jays squawking). Jays are bigger and more aggressive but they do NOT want to be mobbed by Blackbirds! So they kept their distance for awhile. Safety in numbers...

A mob of Red-winged Blackbirds were hungry enough to keep the Steller's Jays away for a little while. It's the numbers game...

Monday Morning First Bird... This is a very active time of year for Steller's Jays around here. They are first to appear every morning and dominate the scenery, although Red-winged Blackbirds and Eurasian Collared Doves give them some competition. #birds #BirdOfTheDay #wildlifephotography

Steller's Jays. 17 September 2026, northern Oregon coast. It's difficult to tell the boys and the girls apart with the Pacific Northwest version of these Corvidae but I tend to assume the one standing guard is the male.
This is a different pair from the previous frame. Both images were cropped from a single frame because these couples were maybe 10 feet apart.

Red-winged Blackbird female and Band-tailed Pigeon, first at breakfast. Ident is tentative: I have a hard time telling Band-tailed Pigeons and Eurasian collared doves apart at this angle. The doves have more bulbous heads, though. Eurasian collared doves are also half the size of Band-tailed Pigeons but I can't tell that from here, without two together.

On this day, 2016 - collage selfie for #throwbackthursday, a thing I haven't done in a long time. I've lived through about 30 years of stress & sickness in the last 10. Parts of me didn't survive.

Selfie from 2016 in collage. Yes there's some editing -- but nothing compared to what two bouts of Covid, long Covid that's still wreaking havoc on my organs, plus caring for my sister until she passed away, and the stress of being a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week caregiver. All in the opposite direction, of course. I feel and look like I've aged 30 years in the last ten.

For the sake of the animals, I try to stay here.

Life is like that.
