In the journals of Cumbrian shipbuilder Kelsick Wood (1771-1840), details of his shipyard contracts and inventories share the pages with his own idiosyncratic watercolour paintings. Here’s just a few, including his self-portrait simonfrancisbrown.com/kelsick-wood...

Day 4 of my Advent Calendar. It has been quite a birdy year, including a trip to Staffa to fulfil a long-held ambition to see puffins. Flittering onto the cliff edge in front of us they strolled about with their hands clasped behind their backs, saying “maaaaawww” and looking wistfully out to sea.

Webb was rarely satisfied with his own work. It is nice to think that there was at least one project that he was happy with. Of Forthampton Court he wrote to Mrs J.R. Yorke in 1891: “It is THE house, of all I have had to deal with professionally, which it is a pleasure to me to think of.”
Photo (2023) of laundry block at Forthampton Court, to which Webb added a three-gabled extension as part of his work there 1890-91.
