Fra Angelo would be pulling his surplice over his head in the sacristy ready for the funeral, kissing the embroidered cross at the centre of his stole before placing it around his neck, dusting then donning his biretta.
Uncle Giovanni was dead. Maria felt empty.
The image of the gunman casually walking away from the café was etched in her mind's eye. Peccatito they called him - Little Sin - and yet he was the most deadly of all.
She draped her mantilla across her hair and turned towards the stairs. She would taste his blood, she vowed.
     And it would be sweet.

The fields are black.
Meghan pulls on her back pack and heads out the back door.
At the gate into what had been Garter Field she stops and breathes, feeling the knot of anxiety tighten - the taste of acid rising into her mouth.
Last week she had found the leverets and now their entire world had burned. Even the hedge had burned, their only possible place of refuge. Smoke had billowed up from the stubble for two whole days and only ceased when the rain had come yesterday.
She lifts the gate latch and pushes it open, then sets off at a deliberately slow pace across the charred ground, her eyes scanning from side to side for any sign of movement.
'Please,' she mutters to herself. 'Please, God.'

A blue scrap of paper, lifted by the wind, settled in a muddy puddle by the park bench where he sat. A young woman came and sat next to him. She smiled at him. He smiled back.

He looked down at the paper again. A dark stain had appeared as the water soaked in. And writing - he could see words written across it.
He put his phone down on the bench & fished it out.
'Don't lose your phone' it read.
He looked up to see the young woman had left.
And his phone?
Gone.
