The most recent publication from one of the Broomspring group... 'Storm Damage' by Jan Vallance, tells the story of Carrie Jensen, who two hours after her wedding takes the train north to find refuge with an old friend, Guy. Misunderstandings and secrets unfold in this beautifully crafted novel.
A copy of Storm Damage. The cover is a photograph of billowing waves under a grey sky.

Here's me reading a story I wrote a couple of years ago. How does a young boy make sense of things that are much too big to fully comprehend? youtu.be/uvMfBkA3XCE?...

Christmassy.
A text post that reads

But I don't feel Christmassy...
     Yes you do
No I don't
Yes you do - this is always how you feel at Christmas.
No it isn't
Yes it is. You always feel tired, and stressed, and not ready, and disappointed.
That is always what you feel like at Christmas, isn't it?
Yes, but it isn't like Christmas was when I was a kid.
But you aren't a kid anymore
No I know
Do you want to be a kid again
No of course not, I just want to feel excited again, like I did then.
So feeling Christmassy actually means that you feel nostalgic and slightly sad, and perhaps a sense of bereavement for simpler times.
Yes.
But that is how you feel.
Well...
So you are feeling Christmassy, it's just that Christmassy has changed. Am I not right?

Yes, you ruined it

the next best thing is the very last slice toasted knowing that nothing has been wasted and yes more butter and sweet bitter marmalade spooned in clumps from the jar and thickly spread and yes more tea Assam or Darjeeling the crunch of the crust the appropriate applause and the dream of encores

The best thing is the first slice cut while the bread is still warm from the oven slaked with thick slabs of cold salted butter the crust a little bitter against the softness of the crumb enjoyed in a quiet kitchen standing up at the counter with tea on a darkening afternoon that is the best thing

Good morning! A rainy day in Sheffield.
A view from my attic window of the neighbours offshot rooftop with a chimney stack at the end, upon which is sat a wood pigeon. It is a grey rainy day. Beyond the city of Sheffield - rows of terraced houses and trees, stretching away to the horizon. Pale grey clouds fill the sky.

Friday afternoon an elderly gentleman dressed in a charcoal suit sits at a bus stop He leans on a cane cranes forward in anticipation of the bus From the top of his breast pocket protrude half a dozen silver-topped pens that decorate his chest like a veteran's medals #poem #poetry #observation

#FromOneLine The storm came knocking...
A poem

the storm came knocking quietish, just
fingernails on windows, just
the creak of dry eyes rolling, just
exasperated outbreaths, and
feathers plucked from bird-breasts, and
seed heads snapped out empty from
the fists of ancient summers, as
cloud-drummers playing rimshots got to
testing out the timpani, but the
thunder bred a litany, and the
wind blew up a mutiny, while the
orchestra were tuning, up
scuppering the teacups, the
candle wicks extinguished, the
squeaking of the catflaps, birds
caught in reckless hedges, on
ledges pigeons hunkered, on
the roofs the ridge tiles riddled, and
the churchyard railings rattled, down
the street the refuse slithered, and
the rain came down like penny drops, hit
the tarmac like a cannon, flooded
gutters, bollocked drainpipes, swept
the rubbish from the busstops, sent the
people running homeward, to their
kettles and their blankets.

Today's bake... I soaked the end of my last loaf in water overnight and added the resulting mush into the mix so no food waste! It made the dough slightly more difficult to get right, and i was a little worried, but the results are very satisfactory indeed!
A round loaf of sourdough bread sitting on a wooden breadboard. I've cut two slices of bread from the loaf to show the crumb structure which is lightly aerated.
