I wrote about the new Jon Hassell record "Music Is Invisible" for The Tonearm, which is gradually becoming an essential site for contemporary music writing. No advertising, no algorithms, just in-depth coverage of music. They are building something good at The Tonearm. Have a look.

Dreamed I was working at a small, exquisite college in Ohio, where I was teaching in the rare book room, but things went askew and I lost both my top and my shoes during a swimming expedition - the rare book room had a swimming hole? I had to borrow a sweater from a baby. What does it mean?!?

And now, reminded by the trip to the pick-your-own, a memory from years ago, when my daughter was, like, 3 or 4. She, and I, and a friend of mine went to pick strawberries. We each had a box, and were chatting and filling up our boxes.

We lived in a little town a hundred miles NNE of Memphis, back in the '80s, and the town mayor/principal of the elementary school also kept a U-Pick strawberry field. I realized, in that field, that the sweetest berries never make it out of the field! Good memories! ♥️♥️♥️

Exactly! 💥 I found a group of almost a hundred people on USENET who were fans of the guy who had designed the little rowing and sailing skiff I had built ten years earlier. It was like I'd died and gone to heaven. The closest I'd gotten to that kind of connection, before then, had bee via magazines!

Mary Grace, my first dialup went to a library in the county seat, through a rotary setup there to the U of TN university library 50 miles north, and I discovered I could TELNET out of there to any place I could discover! Woohoo! My first email account was from a Freenet in Tallahassee, FL! 🔥

The thrilling development when a friend who worked at Software Etc. filled me in on what at command could be used to silence my modem thereby enabling me to do what I called "sneak BBSing" where I dialed in to my favorite boards from the family computer after my folks were asleep. Sneaky.

The frame rate was measured in seconds per frame, rather than frames per second. Frame 1. Someone sitting on the bench. Frame 2. Bus pulls up, obscuring the bench. Frame 3. Bus has gone, and the bench is now empty! OMG! The thrill of it all! What an amazing time the early nineties were! 🔥

The first webcam I ever saw, soon after downloading Netscape, was on Hollywood Blvd, delivered an image the size of a postage stamp, and it was pointed at a bus stop that had a little plexiglass shelter with a bench inside.

Sleep? Really? Why? (It’s 2:48 in the AM, here. Gah. I’m finding, in the last few months, that if I don’t (a) get out for a brisk walk, and (b) turn off all the screens and get them out of the room I sleep in, I will (c) wind up helplessly awake for a couple of hours in the middle of the night. 👻)

“tough physical media like… printed newspapers…” Do you really believe that newspapers, printed on acidic wood pulp, are tough? When was the last time you handled or even saw, first hand, a piece of newsprint more than 100 years old? Even with very good handling they are as fragile as tissue paper.
