Poor Osbourne House (renovated 1983-87 by Peter Elliott), opposite the Museum tram stop & important community housing, is closed & derelict, sold in August 2024: self-contained units were deemed more in line with community needs. But now Air Design Studio are renovating it as a boarding house again!

#DisneyPlus Raya and the Last Dragon, 2021. Impressive but synthetic animation, set in an unengaging all-cultures-are-the-same South East Asia, with over-complex world-building and complicated history, with our heroine needing to discover trust blah-blah-blah etc.

#Netflix Dracula, A Love Tale, 2025. Luc Besson’s Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula: good looking but almost as bad acting by a good cast & worse storytelling: interminable, flabby, draggy, confused, confusing. Only a horse chase over a snowy field littered with animal traps has tension.

#Stan 9 to 5, 1980. Enjoyable, lightweight fable of female-centric workplace innovations triumphing despite the means. Silly but fun, with Dolly a natural star in her first film (RIP), just very sad that the film remains all too relevant and needed.

#SBSOnDemand Clue, 1985. Enjoyed this more the second time, but its combination of mild humour, pratfalls and over-egged farce is not my cup of arsenic, without the nostalgia that drives its continued appreciation. Tim Rice is nicely slightly manic (RIP).

#Stan Pokerface, Season 1, 2023. Natasha Lyonne is Columbo in Rian Johnson’s crime-of-the-week series, enjoyable without being too taxing, keeping the stakes high but the program light: the episode’s case gradually unpicked by Charlie Cale (& her intuitive lie detector) like a comforting countdown.

#Malthouse The Nightline. AV-art installation-verbatim theatre, an odd experience that left me non-plussed. 48 phones, each with 8 lines of real messages left by night owls, interrupted by lights, sounds or the concierge. Whispered confessions are deeply personal but most I heard were pretty drab.

#Netflix Mindhunter, Season 1, 2017. A really intelligent series, with complex characters that slowly reveal or change, and huge tension generated from what is ‘just’ a series of interviews.

#Netflix The Boroughs, 2026. Supernatural/sci-fi series: a desert luxury retirement village has dark forces preying on its elderly folk. Star cast & a script allowing themes of aging, connection & death to emerge from the mystery-at-hand make this well worthwhile (no S2 despite Stranger Things end).

#RedStitch Funeral Flowers. This one-woman play by Caribbean-Brit Emma Dennis-Edwards, remarkably performed by Lucy Ansell, is a startling, punchy, extraordinary evocation of a young life so on the knife edge between self-realisation and desperate failure that we will and will for her to succeed.

#MTC Uncle Vanya. Chekhov’s classic in a typically inventive & detailed production by Anne-Louise Sarks, but the re-written dialogue by Joanna Murray-Smith reduces its impact considerably: rather than ‘immediacy’ & ‘relevance’ it makes the characters & situations seem petty. I was spoilt by the STC!
