I have a nice big monitor; I would like to make use of that screen space rather than just having everything expand to fill it. (…same with RAM. 😂)

I know it has become a de facto norm to style everything with LOTS OF WHITE SPACE but… actually I’d really like it if I had the option to make a lot of UIs much, *much* more information-dense.

Top-level side effects in module scope definitely complicate this one. You could do a fair bit here anyway, of course, but it's telling that rollup had, and rolldown and others still have, comment pragmas to mark "purity". 😮‍💨 But also, now you're tempting me, @rossipedia.com 😂

Really cool piece from the @subvert.fm coop annual general meeting (at 1:35:20): They went for an optional contribution at checkout, rather than taking a percentage of artist's revenue. They saw an average contribution of 27% per transaction, almost twice as much as bandcamp's mandatory 15%.

Very strange and bittersweet to read the end of Darths and Droids: a webcomic parody adaptation of the entire Star Wars saga that I’ve been reading for most of my adult life—no exaggeration. It’s lovely and funny; if you haven’t read it, I commend it to you! www.darthsanddroids.net/episodes/000...

Things that are still worse on Golden Gate than Sequoia once you have done the requisite “Reduce Transparency” and “Enable Outlines” dances (both very strongly recommended!): tabs and the ongoing march away from nice little title bars with reasonably-sized buttons below them in distinct toolbars.

It is in fact noticeably snappier in a bunch of little ways. I still think basically everything about Liquid Glass was a mistake, and the decreased-yet-again layout density that came with it was one of the worst bits. I *do* like the return of color and vibrancy in the UI, though. Baby steps. 😮‍💨😂

Yeah! I’ve been really happy with it since installing yesterday after updating the work machine to Golden Gate—I knew I didn’t want the heavier approach that Raycast was going to, and I *love* that Tinycast has a bunch of strict performance requirements for new features.

Yeah. As someone who is frankly not excited by or particularly happy about a fair bit of this—honestly, as practitioner a lot of days it just makes me sad, and I have long-term concerns about the impact it will have on these fields—a lot of this is what I hear the kids these days call “cope”. 😮‍💨

The more people obtain music directly from artists, the more those artists will be able to survive to make more music. Similar to buying food directly from farms via a CSA or farmers market, the less our lives are mediated by billionaires, the better.

I’ve recently noticed a bunch of apps doing an “update on quitting the app” approach that is clearly meant to help users not have to deal with an interruption in the middle of their work. Good goal! Unfortunately, all of them (most recently Figma) then *relaunch the app*. I just quit it, though! 🙃

Aside: this isn’t a new theme for me! I said exactly this in a talk back in 2024! v5.chriskrycho.com/elsewhere/cutt….
Screenshot of text that reads, “Bake the concept of peer dependencies into your language and package tooling. Make it easy for library authors to check their compatibility with a whole array of different versions of a framework, and for application developers to pick one of those supported versions, and for all of this to be automate-able. No ecosystem has really solved this yet. If you get it right, though, it will make it much easier for your ecosystem to evolve over time.”

Haha, yes, the Unison model definitely has a lot going for it. I haven’t used it “in anger” enough to know whether I would prefer it on balance, but there’s a reason it appeared in my Cutting Edge of Versioning talk (v5.chriskrycho.com/elsewhere/cutt… – text, slides, video) a couple years ago.

To my knowledge, *no* package manager out there tries to integrate/synthesize that information! And trying to express it in JS land is rough—roughly “keep knip and your package manager in sync and… uhh… audit your deps?”
100
Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
One thing that catches my attention in thinking about all of this: you really do need the package manager to be closely integrated with the code itself to help you catch this stuff. You need to know whether it’s a “library” or “app” package, and how it *uses* the dependency.
210
Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
That’s interesting: I don’t feel that way—I generally find it works well in the ecosystems I use most (Rust and TS)—, but I do have an extremely high degree of scar tissue here, per the thread, and I definitely think it’s much subtler than we tend to give it credit for.
100
Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
It does highlight to me that for all the progress a bunch of ecosystems have made in this area over (especially) the past ~20 years (yes, Perl nerds, I know CPAN is much older than that!), there is still an awful lot we could do to make it better.
010
Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
I don’t really blame working engineers for not understanding any of this. I had to learn it by thinking very deeply about the intersection of framework and library development with TypeScript types packages on DefinitelyTyped. If you haven’t had that particular punishing experience… good luck. 😂

Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
…usually all shared and often intentionally resolved to the same version anyway. The problem, though, is that it can and will cause weird resolution issues—things like not resolving some *other* package’s peer dependencies the way you expect—, because pnpm et al. want you to, well, be accurate. 😮‍💨
110
Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
…should then *also* specify it in their own `devDependencies`, so that they resolve it correctly for their own tests. The same basic dynamic holds for libraries with runtime (not dev) dependencies, mutatis mutandis for `dependencies`. In a monorepo, the difference “doesn’t matter”: the deps are…

Chris Krycho @chriskrycho.com · 10/09/2026
Classic example: if you have a package that is designed to work with Vitest, but which is a library, it should explicitly include Vitest in `peerDependencies`. If it also uses Vitest for its own tests (which it probably should), it should *also* specify it in `devDependencies`. Consuming packages…

Looking at a bunch of our package.json files internally and considering the extent to which they’re actually just *wrong* on the strict semantics of our packages, but also considering how hard it is to have the *right* mental model for this—and monorepos make it harder by “absorbing” wrongness.
