Art tip: don't share everything you draw. Draw things you never intend to show anyone. Your brain needs time to just exist in a state that's not about performing for strangers. This used to be the normal way to exist before social media poisoned us.

You can almost picture the artist of this Popeye plush doll as they attempt to draw the backside of the figure. As they finally give up after their umpteenth attempt to get the hand right, they finally succumb to defeat, muttering softly to themselves, “ I yam what I yam……”

Last month we passed a milestone without my realizing: I have now done over ONE THOUSAND STRIPS since I took over FLASH GORDON in 2023. I cannot thank you all enough for reading, discussing, and sharing the comic these past few years. Truly the best gig I've ever had. Much, much more to come ⚡
Unused promo art of the cast of my run on the FLASH GORDON daily strip. Clockwise from top left: Adrane, Flash Gordon, Doctor Hans Zarkov, Bok, Empress Aura, Dale Arden, and Queen Fria. We also see Sky City and a couple Frigian airships.

NEW ADVICE-FROM-LIEBER LIST! I've posted these tips as a thread before, but I figured it's about time I made it available as a single, shareable image.
MISTAKES I'VE MADE THAT YOU CAN AVOID
Don't be like me.
1. Don't trash your own work when complemented. In that context your self-deprecation is insulting someone else's taste! Just say thanks and change the subject. Maybe credit an influence?
2. As far as your readers are concerned, comics are drawn with a printing press or a monitor. Don't fetishize the original art or the tools you make it. Anything that gets the story told the way it needs to be told is the right tool for the job.
3. Don't use one job to audition for another. It's unfair to your collaborators and a betrayal of the reader to get flashy or sexy or explosive if the moment in the story doesn't call for it.
4. The important storytelling choices on a page can be worked out in thumbnails. Gesture, camera angle, framing, broad arrangement of tones-get this stuff right before you worry about anatomy, lighting, drapery, or facial expressions.
5. Some artists can put down a final inkline with no underdrawing, but that's because they're skilled and experienced enough to do all that underdrawing in their head. You probably aren't. Get your underdrawing right and save the masterstrokes for the masters.
6. What you're feeling while you work doesn't matter. What the audience feels when they read it does. You can be happy and still do a great drawing of someone in agony. You should understand what you're depicting. It's not necessary to experience it in real time at the board.
7. Get a fresh eye on your work. You never know when some accidental juxtaposition is going to completely change your intended meaning.
8. Don't let getting things 100% right keep you from getting things done. It's easy to get bogged down in research or prep sketches. Make a schedule at the start of a project so you know how much time you have. Do the best you can with the time allotted and move on. But...

Batman Japanese Menko cards, 1960’s. A couple of these poses you can tell were taken from Adam West promo photos. I love semi-bootleg art like this where details like colors are a bit off model, and probably unlicensed. This time period was rife with this kind of Batman merch, especially overseas.

Blessing the timeline with a 1935 photo of EC Segar in his studio.
Segar's studio is gorgeous with high ceilings and a polished wood floor. There are rifles and musical instruments neatly on display. Segar is turned away from his drawing board playing a cello.

I enjoyed watching the 2026 Winter Olympics, but I’ll say the ice skating events lacked a few things….namely the classic comedy duo of Roy Clark and Jabberjaw, and these eerie versions of the Banana Splits, among others. I hope Bonnie Franklin didn’t fire her agent. youtu.be/ilY8Wp8iWQU?...

Whiz Comics #146 (1952). "Captain Marvel in Terror Stalks the World’s Fair.” Cap is fighting a wonderfully bizarre green alien with an oval body, scales, a small bit of black hair on his head, tiny eyes, big teeth, and at least three tentacles.
