For those thinking if our paper (www.nber.org/papers/w3484...) generalizes to US. Here is teacher absence vs. student SES gradient from IL and MA. Part of this is likely due to teacher's health which is of huge importance from policy perspective when thinking about inequality in schooling in the US.

Was working on something else and stumbled across this paper in JOLE: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1.... Honestly this should have been a top5 for the sheer amount of work and ingenuity the authors put into it. Highly recommend reading for both historical value and curiosity. I learned a lot

just imagine what would Republicans do if this mess was generated by Biden, Harris, Obama, ... [paste any other Democrat]. Also can someone explain to me why congress cannot end this? Aren't there enough Republicans worried about 2026? Or are we not planning the economy to survive to '26?

Chris Karbownik @chriskarbownik.bsky.social · 09/04/2025
Here is a simple solution to this: pass the cuts onto your consumers and see how they and their families vote in '26. In the short-run issue bonds. It's not like demand for education and healthcare is very elastic. Maybe then the public will realize how much public goods these funds generate.

Jen is right. If objective is to max kids' opportunities then data is essential. School choice shouldn't be about "faith" but "facts". I wrote papers showing +, -, & 0 effects of choice thus we absolutely need data so parents & kids can make INFORMED choices. Choice w/o information makes no sense
