Liverpool to Manchester railway, world's first inter-city passenger service, opened on this day 1830. Tragedy struck when politician William Huskisson stepped on to the parallel track and was hit by a locomotive. Taken to nearest place on the line, Eccles, died later that day.

Joseph Williamson and the mysterious portrait
I am sure you will be familiar with the ‘half-seas over’ Portrait of Joseph Williamson. The painting held in Liverpool’s Walker Art gallery, is of Joseph Williamson at the age of 50. On the back of the painting, written in Joseph's own hand writing, is ‘a good likeness of me when I was half-seas over’. The phrase, 'half-seas over’ is believed to mean ‘drunk’.

The shock of the day was our 11th stop. Ball's Bridge. Because it is Grade II listed as an original bridge, but it isn't. It is post 1840, probably 1870, since it was originally built before Archway Road existed and was similar to many of the local 12' wide bridges built into the Roby embankment.
