music dork, movie nerd, tv junkie, gaming goofus...opinions mine, unfortunately. For work I spend lots of time surveying public opinion on all kinds of stuff. Also: St. Louis Cardinals, Blues, and Mizzou. Actively shopping for a Prem side to cheer for.

Well, I made the Plex channel, and I think it's the full oeuvre, excepting directing of some early episodic TV shows. ...am I really gonna do this?

The Supremacy Clause in the Constitution is a thing that exists. Here's the SCOTUS order staying the TRO placed by the judge in St. Louis two days ago and upheld by the 8th Circuit yesterday.

I'll take "Disturbing things to see outside your study window" for $1000, Alex. Yikes. Guessing that's on Arsenal, a block or two west of the old mental health hospital.

Oh and the first LP I ever owned was this beauty, gifted by an older brother. And again: I literally WORE THAT OUT. And I stand by this, to this day: "Shake" by Shadows Of Knight is one of the greatest 2:30 of recorded music humans have ever made.

Finding out that Chuck D reads my two favorite music magazines (MOJO and Shindig) makes me feel 1000% cooler than I actually am (or ever have been or will be.)

MCA bought the American distribution arm of Decca in the early 1970s, and in 1973 they replaced all versions of Tommy in record stores with records having MCA's very seventies-ish, kinda bland cloud and rainbow logo. They even stickered over existing copies with the Decca label. 2/

One of my favorite little details in the movie Almost Famous is that when little Willilam Miller puts The Who's Tommy on his record player, it has the iconic 1960s Decca rainbow logo on it. 1/

There was a pretty funny hot few weeks on this very website when the USMNT had blundered into that red card stupidity when I saw new soccer fans praising the lack of corruption in the Mexican footie organization, FMF... LULZ.
FMF press release essentially saying "Yes, we voted with our fellow CONCACAF organizations yesterday, but also....let's not be hasty here. Sounds like there's some money to be made in Gianni's proposal..."

It has apparently fallen into rights-holder purgatory and thus difficult to find to watch by legal means...but the little Australian film The Dish is worth seeking out to if you want to watch what I think was Sir Sam Neill's greatest movie ever.

OK, so as a lot of weather nerds I follow (yes, I'm a weather dork, too) predicted, the snow path/storm track has shifted significantly north for the weekend. Here's the Euro, which is still the go-to model this far out. (Areas to the south of this, prepare for ice storms...)

Anyway, after David Bowie passed away in 2016, Nina Gordon revealed that back in the 1990s, Scott Miller had made her a Bowie mixtape to listen to for inspiration, and had written out the playlist. Which she shared. 6/

Me, listening to the wonderful deconstructed, noisy, but always finding the hook brilliance of my 2025 Album of the Year, It's A Beautiful Place by Water From Your Eyes.
Scene from the movie Contact where the vision impaired scientist (on headphones) makes a discovery by listening to the signal being sent from space. He says "This has structure. I'm hearing structure." in reply to a colleague who dismisses it all as just noise.

And this one. It's very good. And then the song "Baby You're Just You" comes at the end and it goes trascendent. I swear to goodness, the solo at the end of that song is the most searing encapsulation of 20something angst and frustration ever recorded.

If you're developing a game, please take some free, unsolicited advice: fonts and typography *matter*. Look at the mess above (nothing captures the tone and feel of the dark medieval period quite like Helvetica) vs how even a comparatively small amount of effort pays off below.
Paired opening menu screenshots for Tainted Grail, using ridiculously bland Windows fonts that appear to be Helvetica or Arial or some such, vs an opening menu screencap of Kingdom Come Deliverance II, which uses a vaguely old-timey, old-English type font and typography that does a nice job of creating tone and feeling.

What actor’s expression in a movie will stay with you the rest of your life? (Take all the horror and possession elements out of The Exorcist; I would watch a movie with Patrick Miller as Father Karras questioning his faith, dealing with family, struggling to live his life.)
