Swordfish (formerly Rockers), Tempest and Plastic Factory were my go-tos, but I arrived in late 1990. Can also add Highway '61 in Fletcher's Walk, Summit, Hard to Find, Don Christie, Frank's Wild Records. All low-hanging fruit I'm sure. Oh! The Record Centre - trad jazz on Loveday Street

RIP Peter Watkins (1935–2025) Culloden, The War Game, and Punishment Park alone would cement him as one of the greatest British directors, but he delivered a virtually flawless run of films. A sad loss.

Found one of my favourite music clips again, which always feels like it has drifted in from another dimension. From the introduction, to the stage set, to the cast of characters, to the music itself, it all feels like a dream: Pete Drake & His Talking Steel Guitar - 'Forever'

Its a massacre. Evol is, by far, their most mysterious album and the one I reach for most these days (even though I "technically" think Sister is stronger).

TikTok was never going anywhere. The TikTok creator gave millions to Trump and they orchestrated this whole PR stunt just so Trump will be seen as a 'hero' to young people. It was literally the Kidz Bop version of the Reichstag Fire

My Black Eye Friday pick of things I've enjoyed listening to this year. Woefully incomplete, these are off the top of my noggin'. I'll dredge up some more as they occur to me.

Can live on The Old Grey Whistle Test, 27/1/1974 "From a Philips N1500 video tape found on ebay" This doesn't exist in the BBC archives, an absolutely serendipitous find. Thank you whoever uploaded it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu2w...

Grew up in semi-rural Lincs with my grandparents deep in the Wolds. A Proustian sight for sure.

Just ventured into the loft space to retrieve festive decorations and was reminded that Tom Baker is alive and well up there.

Passover might be their technical masterpiece, that little bass hump. It sounds so minimal and imploded.

A fine choice. For reasons I can't explain I always break out Arthur Lyman's Taboo when the tree is being trimmed and have a gin & tonic to "Sea Breeze". Strangely festive.

Calling Over Time is a deathless classic and an eternal favourite here. Wonderful news.

Boggles my mind how they never "made it" - the first two albums are more impressive than many of their contemporaries ever managed.

Growing up in semi-rural Lincs I was covered by YTV and would avidly tape "Transmission" - a charming, ramshackle low-budget indie round-up fronted by Pat Fish that went out around 2am. This video blew my young mind and accelerated the rot. I love them to this day.

The only reason anti-vax attitudes were able to take root in the modern era is because vaccines are so fucking good at their job people forgot why we need them
