Very interesting perspective. One of the things I appreciate about Togashi's writing is that he doesn't avoid the topic of love (and the nuances that come with it) or relegate it to being a simple metaphorical "reward" for the protagonist. youtu.be/r7HaCJWbWGw?...

But even if you were to ignore all that, there is still the lingering question of "What if you execute someone and it later turned out they were innocent?"

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

I've always been fundamentally anti-death penalty because: 1) Its actually more expensive than sending perpetrators to prison. 2) Death penalties literally do absolutely nothing to discourage crime.

When you go see Primetime for Robert Pattinson and he DOESN'T end up being the best performance in the movie. That honor goes to Skylar Gisondo.

"Do human characters REALLY matter in a Godzilla movie?" Well....YEAH because inevitably we're gonna be spending plenty of time with them. Monster scenes are expensive to film and you NEED human characters to weave story. So at the very least give me humans I don't mind spending time with.

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

"I feel ripped off!! Godzilla was only in the movie for like 5-10 minutes!!" Congratulations you just watched your first Godzilla movie.

I have zero desire to revisit Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops. It really did not take long for the franchise to veer into Michael Bay blockbuster territory (or Tom Clancy on crack take your pick).

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

The only COD game I feel any temptation to replay one day is the first Modern Warfare and even then I'm not sure how much I'll be able to get past the general "pro-War on Terror" theme even though from what I remember its was a bit more nuanced about its depiction of war compared to later entries.

Tell me about it, I almost mentioned Family Guy but then realized it began airing in 1999 so it technically doesn't count. Say what you will about the show and its later seasons but it was so funny and inventive back then. Plus its cultural impact cannot be denied.

Very solid choices. I would add Attack on Titan, Samurai Jack, FLCL, FMAB and Boondocks. I have a friend that really loves Archer too so it probably belongs there too.

In the case of Storrie's character, someone who clearly has way less moral qualms and more willing to go further with the Joker personal than Arthur ever would have. Regardless of my overall feelings on Joker 2, I actually thought the ending was one of the best parts of the movie.

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

The point of the ending was that Arthur spends the third act having "buyer's remorse" about the Joker persona he created and tried to dismantle it. But its too late, its a Pandora's box that can't be closed and its out in the open for anybody to appropriate and use for their own purposes.

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

Listen, I'm not the biggest fan of Joker 2 either but this idea that Storrie's character was meant to be "the real Joker" that actually fights Batman has ZERO receipts. As far as I can tell Todd Phillips never stated this was supposed to be the implication.

I still have every intention of rewatching the series somewhere down the line and seeing how it holds up on second viewing. There is A LOT of great stuff in it and loved its inventive take on an old fairy tale. I rarely ever watch shows on a weekly basis and GL kept me intrigued the whole time.

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

I don't think the ending of GL is bad nor great, its just "an ending." Thematically and intellectually its all there and I was glad to see Lara striking out on her own to become her own person. I just wish we got a bit more Mari material and more extended goodbye scenes with the supporting cast.

100

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

We are only given the briefest of glimpses via their final conversation. Its fine, but It leaves you wanting more and not necessarily in the best way. I rebuke this idea that GL is "yuri bait" because it is SO NOT but at the same time, I don't blame people if the ending left them somewhat deflated.

100

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

I admire that it went for the more bittersweet complicated note and we the audience are given the assurance that Lara and Mari WILL reunite one day. They are still each others "No. 1" but at the same time, I wish we got way more of glimpse into their relationship dynamic post-climax.

Chris Heim VA @chrisheimva.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

(Spoilers for Goodbye, Lara) Two days after GL concluded and I still firmly believe the basic "skeleton" of the epilogue was fine but it REALLY needed to be its own ep and not a 5 minute wrap-up.

Also it really sank in this time that Oshii essentially used the manga as a baseline to essentially make a Ingmar Bergman flick (with all the themes of existentialism, spirituality and identity) in the form of a cyberpunk action thriller. Just incredible.

Got to see the original Ghost in the Shell on the big screen and much like Akira it was very worth it. Probably my favorite parts are just any time it takes time to slow down and let you soak in the suffocating yet mesmerizing New Port City. No dialogue, just pure atmosphere and visual poetry.

Name a movie that fell apart in the final ten minutes: The definition of a movie that SHOULD have ended 10 minutes before it did. Tries to be "happy and uplifting" but the sheer implications only get more low-key disturbing, gross and problematic the more you think of it. bsky.app/profile/ghos...

With Evangelion on Criterion now, I'd like to give any potential newcomers a PSA: Do NOT sweat over the Christian iconography used in the series too much. Anno and the team mostly used it because it looked mysterious and exotic. That and because Anno really likes making Ultraman references.
