Nature’s tiniest nests 🪺🍄 Bird’s nest fungi growing on a mossy log. The “eggs” are actually spore packets called peridioles. When a raindrop hits just right, it launches them out like tiny splash-cups so they can start new colonies. #mushrooms #fungi #NaturePhotography #macrophotography #mycology
Close-up of several small, cup-shaped bird’s nest fungi growing on a dark, textured log covered with patches of green moss. The fuzzy, light-brown cups contain clusters of tiny, oval, grayish-beige “eggs” (peridioles) nestled inside, some with a few scattered on the wood nearby. Soft natural lighting highlights the textures of the fungi and moss against a blurred dark background.

Seafloor snacking at its spiniest 🦀 This decadent decapod, Paralithodes sp., is also known as a king crab. Spiny king crabs crawl across the seafloor in search of their next meal, which could be other crabs, sea stars, dead animals, or organic material that sank from the surface waters above.

Proof that there's more than one way to squid 🦑 The octopus squid (Octopoteuthis deletron) is unique among squids. Most squids have eight arms and two long tentacles, making a total of 10 appendages. But as these squid mature, their two feeding tentacles are reabsorbed into their bodies.

Millions of years ago during the Silurian period, the Sahara Desert was a shallow sea full of aquatic animals like crinoids. Don’t be fooled! Crinoids are commonly called "sea lilies" but they aren't plants! They are echinoderms, like starfish and sea urchins, and many species are still alive today!

Dr. Patricia Bath overcame sexism, racism & poverty and saved the sight of millions of people. She invented the Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment, 1986; it was patented in 1988. She co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, 1976. She died #OTD in 2019. #WomenInSTEM
A vibrant color historical photograph capturing the brilliant ophthalmologist, inventor, and academic Dr. Patricia Era Bath (1942–2019) in an office or laboratory setting, radiating an aura of confident intelligence and warm approachability. Occupying the center and right of the shot, Dr. Bath sits facing forward, smiling brightly with a direct, engaging gaze at the camera. She is dressed in a professional white medical lab coat—subtly embroidered with "Dr. Bath" in red cursive on the left lapel—worn over a light blue button-down denim shirt and accented by a polished gold chain necklace. Pens are visible tucked into her left coat pocket. Positioned prominently to her right on the left side of the frame is a large, white medical laboratory microscope or ophthalmic imaging equipment with black eye-pieces. The background shows a white wooden bookshelf packed with colorful medical texts, binders, and stacked papers. This portrait carries immense historical significance, honoring a legendary trailblazer in STEM who became the first Black female doctor to patent a medical device—the revolutionary Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment—fundamentally restoring sight to millions worldwide.
