Dear Google. I just opened up Google Classroom to find the redesigned homepage. Just wanted to let you know that there are a few rows of spare pixels on the right hand side of the screen that you forgot to cram Gemini into. Not sure how you missed that.

Here's a terrific article from the good people at @theguardian.com about the universal language of Esperanto. It's a long read but comprehensive and fascinating. www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...

Nudists, peaceniks and freeloading travellers: the people keeping the Esperanto dream alive
Esperanto had always seemed to me like an idealistic movement that had failed. So why was its annual congress so vibrant and full of young people?

Yeah fries are fries pretty much everywhere But the burgers are pretty shit. Think it'll be a long time before I try another one. Hungry Jacks (aka Burger King) used to be ok, but they have gone very much downhill.

Chris Betcher @chrisbetcher.com · 26/07/2026
Nah, it doesn't even feel good when you're eating it (I'm talking about the burger, not the other thing) It's regret as soon as I take the first bite.

Hungry Jacks is Burger King in Australia. The name Burger King was already in use when they tried to come here. You know not everything is in the USA right?

Good luck finding Starbucks in Australia. And I don't drink coffee.

I've taken a photo of the burger they served, and a photo of the burger in the menu, then went back to the counter and said "this looks nothing like the picture. I need you to make it again so it looks like this." Second one was not much better so I did it again. They got the message.

I don't really eat fast food, and gave up on McDonald's, Hungry Jacks, etc years ago. But very, very occasionally I give in and have some, thinking maybe it's not that bad. Every single time it tastes like disappointment seasoned with regret.

I sometimes see things online that I consider buying or subscribing to, but if the prices don't clearly indicate "AUD$" then I usually assume it's "USD$" and don't proceed. I wonder how many total sales are lost because of this? Come on advertisers! Include the currency please!

Thanks to their decision to accept the assistance of corrupt interference, the rest of the world was all on Belgium's side today and the US got what they deserved. They deserved to be thrashed by Belgium today. That's karma, and karma is a bitch.

Chris Betcher @chrisbetcher.com · 07/07/2026
Had they excluded Balogun, despite the corrupt interference from Trump, they would have looked like the good guys, making the right decision for the sport. But they chose to take full advantage of the corruption and now they look like a pack of cheating pricks.

Chris Betcher @chrisbetcher.com · 07/07/2026
Trump should not have asked for Balogun's red card to be overturned. And FIFA should never have overturned it. But the US team should have simply not allowed Balogun to play. They should have done the right thing and voluntarily elected to keep Balogun off the pitch.

Seeing the US Football team beaten by Belgium is sweet schadenfreude after Trump's corrupt interference in the red card fiasco. Also, the look of disbelief on the US player's faces that they were actually beaten. This is what it looks like when a "world series" involves the rest of the world.

I ran a Pre-Learner Licence Course for senior students today and we were talking about speed vs stopping distance. While the course had some good examples, it got me thinking of other ways to visualise this, so I made this in Google AI Studio residual-braking-analyzer-973432846473.us-west1.run.app

AI doesn’t just help us think, it thinks instead of us: what this means for the process of learning
When AI hands us an answer, we risk bypassing the process through which learning happens.

But at almost no point that I can remember were teachers connecting, sharing, and developing community ever a result of things that "school leaders" did. So I doubt that we can (or should) rely on them to make it happen. At its best, educators connecting has always been a grassroots thing.

I think one could legitimately argue that the "golden age" of teachers connecting with each other, of sharing ideas, of learning together, was at the height of the web 2.0 revolution with blogs, wikis and podcasts, and then with Twitter, before social media algorithms ruined it completely.

The government's failure to read the room about the electorate's feeling on taxing gas has really shown who they are most focused on serving (spoiler alert, it's not you and I) They've shown an appalling lack of spine and they will almost certainly pay the price at the next election.

If I have to tell AI how I want it to write my emails, I may as well write my own emails. Also, when did we get so lazy that we have to outsource the writing of our emails to an AI. Also, if you can't be bothered to write it, why the hell should I be bothered to read it?

Like most of the world, I used Microsoft Word for many years, until I made a permanent move to Google Docs about 15 years ago. I've had to return to using Word occasionally for some work things, and all I can say is, what a truly awful piece of crap it is. And don't even get me started on Outlook.

Next time you hear someone wanting to stop more immigrants coming into Australia, let them know we can do that just as soon as we change the second verse of our national anthem - "for those who've come across the seas we've boundless plains to share" - so we aren't being a bunch of hypocrites.

I just got an email with a special deal from Qantas, offering me a $500 discount on flights to the US. It's a good deal, but you could not even pay me to visit the US right now. Like so many around the world, I'm disgusted by what's happening there, and don't want to be anywhere near it.
