I could analyze how the decline of trackers coincides with the decline of PC power users who know hexadecimal, keyboard shortcuts, etc, but honestly it's just different strokes for different folks. I'll keep using FL Studio, because it's in my comfort zone, and I'll respect trackers from afar

I make them sound old and outdated, but trackers genuinely have plenty going for them, depending on the kind of music you're making. The robust note-based effects system is something I wish I could do in a piano roll to its extent, which rocks for weird drill and bass and IDM

Programs like Renoise seem tailored to this specific demographic of producers who grew up on trackers, couldn't adjust to DAWs, but want modern QOL features and stuff. I admire those who use trackers and I like tons of music made with them, but I tried Furnace out and struggled against the software

An unexpected divide I found is how while trackers, arcane keyboard-based spreadsheets that make music, are unintuitive to your average producer, the tracker dedicates conversely find modern DAWs confusing and overly complicated. They particularly dislike the mouse-based piano roll interface

For the past few weeks, I've been researching the culture around the music tracker scene, and it kinda fascinates me. It's a relic of old, based on old soundtracker programs from the Amiga, and yet the community is active today, especially for IDM, breakcore, and chiptune producers.

Whenever I get into some niche, mostly dead electronic subgenre, it feels like there's like two different camps of artists: 1. British guys in their 40s-50s who pioneered it decades ago, but mostly moved on 2. That one very dedicated furry musician barely keeping it alive with occasional releases

I've been helping Scathe out with this whole situation and recently his Google account was nuked by support after submitting the tickets. Bit of a mixed bag, it cut off the hacker from his gmail but made getting help with discord's ticket system more complicated
