As is the people that have no idea what a yacht is coalition. Loud, proud, and clueless, one might say.

Loved the farm dogs when we stayed at an airbnb in rural Texas during our last family reunion. Atlas would make a great friend for all, but he won't leave the property even when we're on vacation. It's like we have a virtual leash. That's gotta hurt when I go to work, poor fella.

Besides the point of course. If a sailor is in need, we go and help them. Full stop.

From the photos, I think the Tai Tam was a Beneteau 51.1, so depending on the year of manufacture, equipment and upkeep, probably around $400k. It's not a billionaire's boat.

You'll see a pod breach *on the horizon* and maybe get to see them once or twice more before they're on top of you. Solidly the whale was in charge of this encounter unless they happened upon it while it was sleeping. 🤦

Captain Catboss @choster.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Tell me you've never sailed with a pod of sperm whales without telling me you've never sailed with a pod of sperm whales. A traditional monohull like the Tai Tam cannot escape its hull speed under normal conditions, about 9 knots. A sperm whale can easily fuss about at 20 knots.

I'm sorry, you seem to have confused "unfortunate" with "amazeballs"
010
Captain Catboss @choster.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Sure, newly launched 45 to ~50 ft ocean going monohulls tend to be commissioned by millionaires. Older models, which make up the vast majority of vessels at sea, tend to be liveaboards. I'd render aid to either category in a heartbeat, as would any sailor worth their salt.

Billionaires buy boats that could use a 50 ft sailboat as a runabout and literally dock it inside their stern, next to their sports cars. They buy boats with multiple helipads in case their friends want to come over for dinner.
Steve Jobs posthumous yacht, Venus, 256 ft. White hull, looks like part of the Apple campus wandered out to sea

Billionaires buy boats that wouldn't be too worried about a whale encounter. They buy boats that when you look at them across the harbor at the rich person marina, you're like, oh wow, those little dots moving around on the deck are people!

Yeah, it's similar to how the dudebros pan just about any movie or tv show with a strong female lead, often before they even come out. Ew, gross, it must be for girls and therefore it's bad. 🤦

1) So are the vast majority of people that live on boats. It's like making fun of people living in trailer parks for getting hit by a tornado or flood. 2) The ocean is trying to kill you the entire time. Compassion and camaraderie are the emotions you should reach for here.

Fun fact: the Kármán line is 60 km below the anacoustic zone... so there's rather a lot of space where people could, at least theoretically, hear you scream.

Tell me you've never known a liveaboard without telling me you've never known a liveaboard... Sure, some have a bit more scratch than others (new vessels, crewed vessels, or catamarans) but the spectrum is about the same.

I'm so glad they are safe. As a lifelong sailor and lover of the ocean, YES, I also hope the whale is okay, but y'all can step the fuck off with the anti-sailor bullshit. If you've never been out of sight of land on a small craft for days on end, you just have no idea. Show some respect.

Seen from another angle, it's an inflated halloween decoration, still mildly penis shaped, but it also looks like the bad guy from the Scream movie series

I'm reminded of the fire extinguisher at my last job that was mounted on the opposite side of the wall from the big red sign declaring its location. They were separated by about 100 steps. 🤣

"Slightly more likely" but also it's just a distraction that idiot is trying to use to justify his racism, when the painfully obvious reason people end up on welfare is that they'd rather not starve to death. smdh

I wouldn't bat an eye at someone bringing a coffee to an interview, and I've interviewed a hundred people in the past year. Years ago, I did turn up my nose at a guy that biked to an interview in Austin, TX on a hot day and opted not to take a shower or change and sat leaning back in his chair...
