I really ought to read more of the robot books myself. I'm somehow (needlessly) surprised each time I read some more Asimov and find the story both approachable and entertaining.

If you do want a book about a police detective begrudgingly working with a robot on a case, I recommend Asimov's "The Caves of Steel."

One of my all-time favorite animated characters, Gromit, born from practical and budget limitations. Because, of course. News to me! thank you for your latest article @ani-obsessive.bsky.social animationobsessive.substack.com/p/wallace-an...
Gromit turned into a dog really early on, since Park found dogs easier to model. And the character's dialogue was cut due to animation difficulties in the first week of the shoot. "That's when I realized I could do everything with the eyes. Gromit was suddenly born. He didn't need a mouth. He became a very introvert and very intelligent dog," Park remembered.

I want one of these... I'm wondering if I should splurge for a modded backlit screen, or stick with the authentic experience. I'd also have to decide on a color (there are lots of options). The ridiculous blue camouflage model is always what comes to mind when I think Neo Geo Pocket Color.

I also feel like this film really didn't need to be set in the 90s? It just felt off to me, and not in an intentionally unsettling way. >__>

It's just a case where I see a great and eye-catching premise, but the execution leaves me wanting. In hindsight, I think the resolution (or non-resolution?) of the furniture store owner's inner struggle is a particular disappointment for me.

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 14h
None of this is outright awful (and it perhaps doesn't help that I had already seen Hokum and Exit 8, both of which have some notable overlap with this, and both of which I enjoyed more).

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 14h
Character arcs don't really resolve, so much as just stop. Answers to questions are generally along the lines of "there are no answers, okay?!" The chase sequences feel rote, the scares feel held back, and the final twist feels standard.

As for the second half, well... I appreciated the attempt to explore the characters' Grief and Trauma a bit, and to finally give the horror film a bit of tension. But I don't think it really did a good job at either.

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 14h
The first half presents the world of the backrooms, and it is indeed really cool... for a while. Eventually I grew bored. I'm also not a fan of "found footage," the shaky camera of which gives me a headache. Hearing characters give "Blair Witch Project" level dialogue also wears me out real quick.

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 14h
There are two halves to this movie—I've seen people say they dug the first half a lot more, and other the second half. I hemmed and hawed over this a while and decided I have issues with both halves.

It's a bit annoying that if I call this confounding or obtuse, the immediate response in my head is "well, isn't that the point?" But for me there's a big difference between the reactions "wow, that was crazy! (satisfied)" and "uh, that just happened (unsatisfied)" ...and I get it, YMMV.

It has a cool and unique look to it, a very "glitch in the Matrix" vibe that feels fitting for the world of meaningful art vs generated slop in our present moment. But once I hit the credits of this, all I could do was shrug.

I've enjoyed me some creepypasta, SCP Foundation stories, and weird indie games about exploring unsettling dreamscapes that reflect a troubled psyche (Yume Nikki, et al) or being chased by spooky monsters in confusing art-worlds (think Ib). So Backrooms seemed like something I was sure to dig.

Not a Lupin head, but this was a fun watch. It's simple enough to follow for newcomers, like Castle of Cagliostro. Also a rare case where I'd say the anime -> CG animation jump was pulled off really well.

Render of a close up of Heath Ledger's face (as the Joker) holding a playing card with a picture of Christian Bale's Batman on it (from The Dark Knight). It's a Joker card somehow. The rest of the image is pitch black except for text on the right.

"Fool you once, shame on you, fool you twice, joker's trick.."

-(in red text) The Joker

This image may have been sincere at one point, but spawned the legendary twitter account "Joker's Trick", a layered parody of gimmick accounts.

Yup, exactly. I read it as "we're all dealing with so many problems in our personal lives, and that's bad enough. But then some random person (i.e. the rich and powerful elite) can at any time completely ruin all our lives for literally no reason... and face no consequences."

I saw a review describe this series as a reflection of what it feels like to live in the 2020s, which sadly feels apt

All in all, this is pulp that'll appeal to most fans of classic fantasy fare, but it's not for me. I considered reading a third and fourth volume (they were included), but I think I'll move on to other things I'm more in the mood for.

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think what I disliked the most was the dialogue. Lots of repetitive arguing back and forth, lots of squabbling and bickering and complaining. Just something that annoys me after a while! I can't stand it IRL so I don't want to read so much of it in my free time reading.

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It's very "monster of the week" stuff, which isn't a bad thing in and of itself IMO, but I found most of the trials solved too abruptly, and most of the protagonist's musings along the way rather half-baked. Perhaps the series has interesting things to say about society and government... eventually?

Which means to get out a jam, he has to be saved by someone else at the last second, or just get extremely lucky thanks to magic and/or random happenstance. I guess a lot of the conflicts end up eliciting little more than a shrug from me.

Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But you could also say a lot of the pet peeves I encounter in much of fantasy writing, I encountered here too. I'll start with Elric himself. Half the time he feels like a very chuuni Gary Stu, able to suddenly do whatever the plot calls for. And half the time he feels suddenly incompetent...
100
Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I found these books somewhat interesting to read in terms of their place in fantasy genre history, but I never felt particularly hooked by the plot or found the characters or setting that interesting. I recognize it's partly an issue of "well, the tropes have got to come from somewhere!"
100
Cho Desu @chodesu.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is apparently very influential for dark fantasy and fantasy adventures (folks compare the world-building of "A Song of Ice and Fire" series to it), but what stands out to me is just how archetypal the protagonist Elric feels. Byronic hero, edgy antihero, morose and poetic bishounen.
