The inimitable Steve Irwin, soaking wet, and waist deep in a lagoon somewhere. When you’re so depressingly adult that you get irrationally excited about a new garden hose….. 🙄 To be fair, though, the hose it replaces was 25 years old, and cracked catastrophically in multiple places when I pulled it off the reel

My new garden hose. 50 feet of supple, dark blue perfection, with a lighter blue stripe running it's length. It is wound around my old, battered green and gray plastic hose reel, with a round lawn sprinkler dangling from its end. I think I may need a moment alone....

250 years ago today, our forefathers decided that we had had enough.
Enough of tyranny.
Enough of rule by whim.
Enough of unrepresented governance.
Enough.
Since then, we have decided that a certain minority of the population were, in fact, full citizens, and NOT 3/5 of a person.
Since then, we have decided that no person can own another.
Since then, we have decided that ALL citizens, regardless of landed status or gender or color or creed, have the right to participate in our system.
Since then, we have decided that marriage between any race or gender is recognized by the government.
Since then, we have decided that being a member of a political party that is not in power does NOT disqualify one from participation in society.
Since then, we have decided that those who come here to work for a better life may find it.
Since then, we have strived to improve on what we started two and a half centuries ago.
We’ve not always done well. We have sometimes slipped back, sometimes egregiously so, but always have come out a step ahead of where we started.
And remember this: The national motto of the United States is NOT “In god we trust”, but “E Pluribus Unum”. Out of many comes one. We may look different. We may speak differently. We may dress differently. We may love differently. We may think differently. But we are ALL Americans. We all have a voice. We all have a say in our future. If you are eligible to vote, register now (if you haven’t already), and vote.
