Why is there a full-court press for this thoroughly mediocre children's book series going on everywhere? I got bored of this tripe when I was 15 and would read anything and everything; I'm not going to look at it again now.

The outfit is his best approximation of what the filthy plebs wear. Everything about this screams "hello, fellow common person".

Can we eat them?

Yup! There's a Pizza Hut on chemin Queen-Mary, près de la station Snowdon.

Canada was left holding the bag on this bunch of magic beans. What we need is a new bunch of magic beans.

Trump trying to strong-arm an extremely sensitive group of people while he is politically flailing and on the cusp of being rendered a lame duck is an all-time bag fumble. There's no reason for Canada to concede when the regime is rapidly spiralling into its lame-duck age.

Pretty sure it's at least partly-owned by a Brazilian investment firm anymore. Doesn't matter; Tims has sucked ever since they stopped having in-house bakers. Best thing they have going is that they're often the only bathroom for hours on a long road trip.

It's a crappy fast-food chain with terrible products wrapped in ersatz Canadiana and it exploits vulnerable foreign workers. The only good thing about Tim Horton's is that it's often the only decent bathroom on a road trip. It would be like McDonald's sold itself on Americana in the United States.

This thread reminded me of how much I hated Mewgenics, how much I wish I liked Disco Elysium, and how badly Breath of the Wild bounced off of me.

Tony, Supervisor at Nubby's Number Factory @chipemups.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Mewgenics took the edginess that the Binding of Isaac transcended with sheer mechanical brilliance and made it into the point of the game. Throwing cats at mad scientists and a hateful stereotype named "Tink" gave me Duke Nukem Forever vibes.

Tony, Supervisor at Nubby's Number Factory @chipemups.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Mewgenics is a good pull. The conceit of the game was poorly explained and the humor was profoundly dated. Solid music, but I'm not shocked it had none of the staying power of The Binding of Isaac.

I absolutely hated Breath of the Wild. Durability is incompatible with the mechanics of the series to me and the lack of direction made the game feel pointless. I was shocked by how much I disliked it and sold the game on a month after I bought it.

One my favorite game soundtracks, but I've never been able to actually get into the game itself. I've tried playing it three times now, and each time I feel like I need a guide (which defeats the point).

Different country, but one of the things that really damaged the Trudeau regime was in 2002 when the then-finance minister suggested that people cut their Disney+ subscriptions in the face of Canada's cost-of-living crisis. Amazing how many times politicians have to learn this lesson.

"Stand on business, defend trans people, don't let the bigots think they are normal or right or accepted. The rest is out of your control." A line that's gonna sit with me for a while.

Happy to share! Unfortunately, his magnum opus, The Fur Trade in Canada, is both required reading for serious students of Canadian political thought and also a brutally dull read. His parallel reflection "A Plea for Time" is mercifully shorter: gutenberg.ca/ebooks/innis...

Harold Innis' grave fear that Canada had gone "from colony to country and back to colony" in his lifetime rings in the ears.

At every turn when Americans talk about Canada I am reminded of the quip that the fundamental difference between Canada and the U.S. is that the latter will rip itself apart and the former will one day kinda look around, shrug, and disband Confederation because it's just kind of a hassle.

Things must be going really badly for the slop machines if they're busy doing Weekly World News crap like this to try to convince people that Markov chains can do more than write bad code and drive people nuts.

When I was a kid we had an "ethnic" section of the grocery store. The only food I knew of that wasn't Western European was Ethiopian food from church, and kids made fun of me at school for liking food that they called unmentionable things. Same town has restaurants from every continent now.

Why is your politics predicated on hopelessness and derision? Can you truly see no political future beyond being lied to by mediocrities? How very sad.

This isn't "talking about" anything. It's empty pablum. "Middle-class" doesn't mean anything, and Hack's not saying anything about how he intends to return the wealth stolen from everyday people by the billionaires who support him to the common person.

Nope! It's just funky Markov chains. It has no real power and can't do much more any other made-up Boogeyman. The real hazard of LLMs is people believing that they're anything more than a vicious bubble promoted by the ultra-rich. Hope that helps!

Welcome to Canada. Our oligarchs have an obscene amount of power over our lives. I shudder to think of how much knowledge the Westons have about what I eat, and I don't even use the rewards card.

I think this photo more than anything demonstrates that the guy's clout is in freefall and his time in the sun is coming to an end. Totally ignored, standing there gearning trying to get anyone to care about him...

That would make sense. Much of my understanding of Scotland comes from the film Trainspotting and a friend who has rather grim things to say about the place (crumbling infrastructure, smug inaction predicated on 'England's worse'), so I definitely see the line between Scotland and Canada.

Totally willing to share the title, and extremely willing to listen if you've got more to say on the matter! I do think it's interesting that not-England is itself seemingly a good marketing strategy.

Canada is in many ways the single most successful branding exercise in history. We are a neoliberal extractive colony with crumbling social infrastructure and middling economic prospects, but many Canadians will hand-wave away problems here and use those same problems to condemn Americans.

Not lost on me that a lot of the "elbows up" crowd are lining up to eulogize an odious person whose primary claim to fame is cozying up to the guy who is ostensibly threatening our sovereignty.

Because the only party that really matters in this country is the Liberal Party. Canada's aristocracy and extractive elites are concentrated in the Party. People need to realize that the Liberals aren't a moderate party. They are the apex of Canadian power.

The best part is that the Albertans who hate him will remain totally unconvinced, while fearmongering about Pierre will become less effective over time. A neoliberal technocrat trying to appeal to reactionaries by discarding progressives and winning neither--where have I heard that one before...

Canadian policies around Indigenous Peoples (the Indian Act's pass system in particular) were a major part of the inspiration for South African Apartheid, too.
