Prison reform advocates are calling on the state to reconsider the mail restrictions, arguing that they have failed to stop drugs from reaching incarcerated people while imposing unnecessary limits on their ability to communicate with family and friends.

They note that all visitors are required to walk through body scanners in each of the state’s 41 facilities while officers can simply decide if they want to be screened. (State law prevents the department from forcing correction officers to go through body scanners; they can refuse “for medical or other reasons” and opt for alternative methods of screening.)

“Make that make sense,” said Michelle Bonet, who founded the advocacy group NYS DOCCS Federal Oversight to help incarcerated people and their families.

New York City's filthy rich have gotten considerably richer—and it's made our city one of the most unequal places to live in America.

That's according to a new report from City Comptroller Mark Levine, which notes that from 2019 to 2024, roughly two-thirds of New York City's real income growth accrued to the top 1 percent, compared with 39 percent in the rest of the country.

The top 0.1 percent—these are the people whose average income was $23,746,985 in 2024—accounted for more than half of the city's income growth over this time period.

(Take a big sip of coffee before you continue reading, because you'll want maximum spit take volume when you read the absolutely grotesque series of numbers that represent the growing chasm in the souls of a certain sector of our population.)

If you were a New Yorker in New York City's top 1 percent, you were pulling in an average of $2,883,758 in 2019; by 2024 you were making $4,027,603, a 16.2 percent increase after factoring in inflation, according to the report.

If you somehow find yourself in the top 0.001 percent, you saw your income jump from $315,408,951 to $598,490,198—a 57.9 percent jump after inflation.

This is plenty galling, but as the report states, the biggest gut-check is what's happening to the rest of us—the New Yorkers who aren't sending our kids to ski camp in Gstaad or filing frivolous lawsuits while living in $18 million Upper East Side mansions.

I am a longtime 1Password user. But beyond that, I am an information security professional. In that capacity, I am responsible for convincing literally countless companies to adopt Business and Enterprise plans for their companies and helping them onboard. I haven't bothered to add up exactly how much recurring 1Password revenue I am personally responsible for, but needless to say, it's a lot.
In addition, I am also a desktop Linux user and have used Linux as my primary OS for nearly twenty years.
I am shocked to see that 1Password has become the first independent corporate sponsor of Omarchy, a Linux distribution created by a man who openly supports genocide of ethnic minorities: David Heinemeier Hansson.
I am also appalled to see that 1Password has responded to other people who share my concern by trying to draw a meaningless distinction between the Omacom Foundation and David Heinemeier Hansson. There is no way to support Omacom without tacitly condoning the reprehensible behavior of its founder. The statement "1Password does not endorse hateful, dehumanizing, or exclusionary views" is completely at odds with the fact that 1Password has pledged $300,000 to a foundation controlled by a man who openly calls for repeating a genocide previously enacted by Adolf Hitler himself.
I am mortified that I am responsible for driving revenue to Agile Bits only for the company to turn around and spend that money in such an odious way. If Agile Bits is truly committed to its stated values of "not endorsing hateful, dehumanizing, or exclusionary views, the company must rescind its deal with the Omacom Foundation, refuse to pay the remaining $200,000, and claw back the $100,000 already paid.
Unless Agile Bits reverses course on this funding, I will not in good conscience be able to continue recommending 1Password professionally, or to use it personally.
Genocide is a bright line, and it is imperative that we all stand on the correct side of that line.

It is an absolute mindfvck too me that one of the reasons I have any semblance of financial security (& a lack of student loans) is because of this man. For July 4th, I had the honor of DJing one of my favorite events: a decades-long tradition of queers coming together in joy and celebration. It was hot and humid - the kind of air so thick it feels like pudding, but we danced from sunset until near dawn.

This weekend was also the 250th "birthday" of the USA. Perhaps appropriately, we almost forgot about it. Because what's more important: recognizing a nation-state superpower with a deeply complicated history, or celebrating the spirit of the people around us - our community, in all its diverse and chaotic splendor?
